Why we organize by pack, not by vehicle. Three Hyundai EVs, a Kia, and a Genesis all share the same battery hardware. When the ICCU recall dropped, it dropped on all five. The pack matters more than the badge — and that's the lens this database uses. Each pack lists every vehicle it powers, and each model page links back to the pack reference.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most common EV battery chemistry?

NCM (nickel-cobalt-manganese) and its variants (NCMA, NCM 811) dominate long-range EVs from Hyundai, GM, Ford, BMW, and Tesla's Long Range trims. LFP (lithium-iron-phosphate) is taking share in standard-range trims and Chinese-built EVs because of cost and cycle life. NCA (nickel-cobalt-aluminum) is used by Tesla's Panasonic-supplied 2170 packs.

What is the typical EV battery warranty?

Most US-market EVs and PHEVs carry an 8-year / 100,000-mile battery warranty with a 70% capacity floor (the manufacturer will repair or replace if degradation drops the pack below 70% of original capacity within the warranty window). Hyundai and Kia offer 10 years / 100,000 miles, the longest in the mainstream market.

Why does the same model use different battery packs across years?

EV makers refresh battery suppliers, chemistries, and capacities frequently. Tesla Model 3 RWD shifted from NCM 2170 to LFP prismatic in 2021 and back partly in 2024. Ford Mach-E moved from LG NCM to mixed sourcing. The pack is sometimes more important to long-term reliability than the model nameplate.

How accurate are these degradation numbers?

Each pack cites its source aggregate study (Recurrent, Geotab, ISeeCars, manufacturer data) with year and sample size when available. These are fleet averages, not guarantees for any individual vehicle. Driving profile, climate, and DC fast-charging frequency all move the curve significantly.

Are these factory packs or replacement packs?

Factory packs as installed at the assembly plant. Replacement packs under warranty are typically the same generation but may use newer firmware revisions. Out-of-warranty replacements may use refurbished or third-party packs (notably Tesla and Bolt EV markets).

How this database is built

Each pack record is curated from manufacturer press materials, EPA fueleconomy.gov filings, and supplier announcements. Aggregate degradation numbers cite the source study (Recurrent, Geotab, or ISeeCars) with year and sample size when published. Known issues come from NHTSA recall campaigns, technical service bulletins, and field reports. We update packs as new data emerges.
