Known issues

High
NHTSA 22V-541 (July 2022) covers certain 2022-2023 iX xDrive50 and iX M60 and 2022 i4 eDrive40 and i4 M50 vehicles. The high-voltage battery may have internal damage that causes a short circuit and a fire risk. Owners were told not to drive or charge the car and to park outside and away from structures until dealers replaced the battery, free of charge.
High
NHTSA 24V-135 (February 2024) covers four cars from model year 2024, three i4 and one i5 eDrive40. The high-voltage battery module may have insufficient weld seams, which can make the battery overheat. Dealers replace the module free of charge.
High
NHTSA 25V-470 (July 2025) covers 136 cars, 130 of them iX, with four i7 and two i4. High-voltage battery cell modules may not have been assembled properly, which can stress the module frame and cause the module to fail, with a risk of fire. Dealers replace specific battery cell modules free of charge.
Medium
NHTSA 22V-944 (December 2022) covers about 14,000 cars from model years 2022-2023, among them the iX, the i4 and the 2023 i7 xDrive60. The high-voltage battery control unit software may cause an interruption of electrical power. Dealers update the software free of charge.
Medium
NHTSA 23V-295 (April 2023) covers a small number of 2022-2024 iX xDrive50 and 2023 i4 cars. The high-voltage battery cell monitoring circuit may have improperly secured electrical connections, which can cause a stall. Dealers replace the monitoring circuit free of charge.
Medium
NHTSA 24V-611 (August 2024) covers 1,150 i4 cars from model year 2024. The left-side longitudinal beam may crack, and reduced structural integrity can lead to damage to the high-voltage battery in a crash. Dealers inspect the beam and replace it as necessary, free of charge.
Medium
NHTSA 25V-395 (July 2025) covers certain 2022-2025 i4, 2022-2024 iX, 2023-2024 i7 and 2024 i5 vehicles. The electric drive motor software may shut down the high-voltage system and cause a loss of drive power. The software is updated over the air or by a dealer, free of charge.
Low
BMW describes the i4's battery as four modules of 72 cells and three 12-cell modules with a net usable energy content of 81.1 kWh at 398.5 volts, charging from 10 to 80 percent in 31 minutes at up to 200 kW. Its 2023 release on the xDrive40 gives 80.7 kWh and up to 205 kW.
Medium
BMW's US warranty covers the high-voltage battery against defects in materials or workmanship for 8 years or 100,000 miles. The 2022 through 2025 booklets set no capacity floor. BMW added one, at 70 percent state of health, with the 2026 model year booklet.

How this pack ages (industry context)

Industry fleet aggregates: 2.3% average annual capacity loss across 22,700 EVs / 21 models (Geotab, 2026), and 95% range retention at 5 years on average across 30,000+ vehicles (Recurrent, 2026).

OEM warranty floor on this pack: 8 yr / 100k mi.

Public per-pack degradation curves are not available for most models. Individual results vary materially with climate, charging behavior, and DC fast-charge frequency.
