Battery ECU software defect (NHTSA 26V393000, filed June 2026). Two integrated circuits in the Denso-supplied battery ECU can overwrite the same memory address, failing an operational check. Repeated failures post an “EV System Malfunction” warning, illuminate multiple malfunction indicator lamps and shut down the electric drive system, with power steering and power-assisted braking still operating. 20,991 vehicles: 11,495 Toyota bZ, 4,757 Subaru Solterra, 4,739 Lexus RZ. Remedy is a free dealer software update; owner letters mailed 2026-08-17.

A software error may let the drive battery overcharge under certain driving conditions, which can shut down the electric drive system and cause a loss of drive power. Dealers update the BEV ECU software free of charge. The Solterra is not named.

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2026 Toyota BZ, Lexus RZ, and Subaru Solterra battery electric vehicles. The electronic control unit (ECU) that controls the high voltage battery may experience a fault, resulting in a loss of drive power.

Consequence: An unexpected loss of drive power increases the risk of a crash.
