Reliability Overview

The Durango carries one of the longest production runs and one of the worst reliability records in the midsize SUV segment. NHTSA has logged 4,358 complaints, 39 recalls, and 144 fire reports across the 2011-2025 generation, fifteen model years on the WK2 platform shared with the Jeep Grand Cherokee. The Durango sits at segment rank 11 against a median of 46 complaints per year, averaging 290. Both volume engines carry avoid ratings. The long generation life means early-build cars are now operating on electrical systems Chrysler has recalled and re-recalled multiple times.

The 6.4L Hemi is the cleanest engine on the car. Sold in the 2018-2023 SRT 392 trim, it logged 28 complaints across five model years and no fire reports, while both volume engines carry avoid ratings. But it lives in a performance trim priced well above the family-hauler tier most Durango shoppers are considering. The reliable engine isn't available in the configuration most people are buying.

Electrical-system complaints lead the field at 1,685, more than triple the next category. The pattern aligns with Chrysler's repeated TIPM (Totally Integrated Power Module) recalls: a 2014 fuel pump relay campaign on 2011 cars caused stalling without warning, a 2017 alternator-failure recall hit 2014 3.6L cars, and a 2017 brake booster water-intrusion recall stacked on top of a 2014 campaign whose initial remedy proved insufficient. The 144 fire reports concentrate on the 3.6L V6, which logged 91 of them across its 2,822 complaints. ABS module software defects on 2018-2019 cars triggered three separate recall campaigns over six years, and the failure can disable both antilock braking and electronic stability control at once.

Fifteen years on one platform is unusual for a midsize SUV. The 2011-2014 cars share most of the worst electrical recalls with the Jeep Grand Cherokee of the same vintage, and several of those campaigns required follow-up remedies after the original fix fell short. The 2014 and 2021 refreshes brought new electrical architecture each time, and each architecture has produced its own complaint pattern: steering-rack-binding and EGR-valve issues on 2021-onward cars, ABS-module software defects on 2018-2019 cars, and the wiring-fire and TIPM history on the earliest 2011-2014 build window.

V8 buyers chasing the cleanest reliability story should look at the 6.4L Hemi (sold in the SRT 392 trim), accepting that the trim costs what it costs. Anyone who needs the three-row family hauler at family-hauler money should weigh fifteen years of compounding electrical recalls against more recently designed competitors in the segment.

Buyer's Guide

The strongest reliability story sits in the 6.4L Hemi, sold in the 2018-2023 SRT 392 trim. It carries the cleanest complaint record on the car, but it's a high-MSRP performance trim, not a budget option. For shoppers buying the volume powertrain, the 2018-2020 cars sit between the worst of the early-build electrical recall stack and the later ABS-module campaigns. The pre-refresh 2011-2013 cars carry the heaviest TIPM and wiring-fire history and should be avoided as a daily-driver buy.

Three checks pay off before signing. Run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup and confirm completed remedies for any TIPM-related campaign (2014 fuel pump relay, 2017 alternator, 2014/2017 brake booster), since these are the highest-fire-risk items on the generation and have generated follow-up campaigns when initial fixes were insufficient. On 2018-2019 cars, ask for evidence that the ABS-module software updates from 2022 and 2024 were both completed; the original 2022 fix did not resolve the underlying defect and a 2024 follow-up was needed. Cars built from 2021 onward with the 3.6L need confirmation that the EGR valve and steering-rack-binding recalls have been remedied.

The Durango trades for less than its segment peers on the used market, and the discount reflects the recall history rather than the sticker price. A buyer comparing a used Durango against a used Toyota Highlander of similar vintage is also comparing two very different reliability records. The price gap is real, and so is the ownership-cost spread it predicts.
