Reliability Overview

The DS-generation Ram 1500 ran from 2009 through 2018, ten model years of body-on-frame full-size truck production that bridged Chrysler's bankruptcy, the Fiat takeover, and the predecessor structure to Stellantis. NHTSA has logged 14,303 complaints across that span, 44 recall campaigns, 783 crash reports, and 221 fire reports. The fire count alone makes this generation one of the more troubled full-size trucks in the dataset, and the 583 injuries and 10 fatalities recorded against the platform speak to incidents serious enough to file federal complaints over.

The dominant vehicle-level weakness in the bucketed data is steering, with 40 critical-severity complaints. Electrical and engine-system clusters follow at 16 and 14 critical complaints respectively. These bucketed totals represent a small fraction of the 14,303-complaint top line; most filings sit at the model level without being routed to a specific subsystem in NHTSA's categorization. The recall record fills in some of that picture: powertrain campaigns affecting 2009-2010 and 2009-2012 production runs, a fuel-system recall scoped specifically to trucks ever registered in Connecticut, a 2011 suspension recall, and additional campaigns spanning the rest of the generation.

Engine-level data on the DS is uneven. The 3.6L Pentastar V6 (ERB) introduced for 2013 has 79 bucketed complaints and a "recommended" rating with a score of 3.6, the only engine on the generation with enough variant-level data to support a meaningful per-engine call. The 4.7L Magnum V8, 5.7L Hemi V8, and 3.0L EcoDiesel V6 that powered most DS trucks sit in the unknown-engine-code bucket. NHTSA's VIN database returns displacement and cylinder count for those VINs but not specific engine codes, so the 14,194 complaints in that bucket can't be cleanly split by V8 or diesel variant from federal data alone.

The 221 fire reports across ten model years is the cluster that should anchor a buyer's risk assessment. The dataset doesn't isolate the specific failure mode driving the fire reports, but the volume is significant in absolute terms and the corresponding 583 injuries and 10 fatalities indicate that some of those fires resulted in serious outcomes.

The DS is now a deep used-market truck, with the youngest examples seven model years old and the oldest pushing seventeen. Maintenance histories vary widely, and the recall completion rate on individual trucks is the variable that most affects ownership outcomes. A truck with all 44 generation-applicable campaigns completed is a different ownership proposition than one with several open.

Buyer's Guide

For DS shoppers, the 2013-2018 trucks with the 3.6L Pentastar V6 are the only variant in the dataset with enough complaint coverage to support a specific recommendation. They sit at "recommended" with a score of 3.6. The V8 and diesel options that powered most DS trucks don't have usable per-engine ratings here. NHTSA's VIN database returns displacement and cylinder count for those VINs but not specific engine codes, leaving the bulk of V8 and diesel complaints in an unspecified bucket. Reliability calls on those engines have to come from outside the federal complaint dataset.

Pre-buy inspection on a used DS should center on the recall-completion record first. With 44 campaigns across the generation and 221 fire reports on file, the odds that a given truck has open campaigns are not negligible. Pull a VIN-keyed recall lookup at nhtsa.gov/recalls and verify completion of any open work before signing the paperwork. Pay particular attention to powertrain and fuel-system recalls, which dominate the early years of the generation.

Beyond the recall record, the steering system warrants a careful test drive given that 40 of the bucketed complaints sit there as critical severity. Listen for clunks at low-speed turning, watch for any wandering or vague on-center feel at highway speed, and inspect the front suspension for play. Older DS trucks (2009-2012) are now deep used-market vehicles, often on their third or fourth owner; documented maintenance history matters more than odometer reading on this generation.
