Reliability Overview

The JL Wrangler generation logged 3,585 NHTSA complaints across 2018-2025, with 37 recalls and 61 fire reports across the run. The data splits cleanly along powertrain lines. The 4xe plug-in hybrid alone accounts for 1,541 complaints (43% of the generation) and 24 of the 61 fires, driven by a sequence of high-voltage battery recalls. The gas variants carry the front-end steering issues owners have been calling the "death wobble" since this generation launched.

Electrical issues lead the vehicle complaint categories at 1,377 records, and most concentrate on the 4xe high-voltage system. Chrysler has issued at least four HV battery fire recalls on the 4xe across 2022-2025, each tied to internal battery failures that can cause vehicle fires while parked or charging. NHTSA's instruction to affected owners was to stop charging and park outdoors until the fix shipped. A separate 2025 OTA software recall on 2023-2025 4xe vehicles caused unexpected loss of drive power. Buyers cross-shopping the 4xe should treat battery recall remedy completion as the first inspection item, not a marketing footnote.

Steering issues account for 1,074 complaints, the second-largest category. Three separate steering or track-bar recalls hit 2018 and 2019 production for weld defects: intermediate shafts that could split, stub shafts that could break and detach the steering wheel, and front track bar brackets that could separate from the frame. The complaint pattern persists into later model years even after those discrete recalls were closed, with owners reporting the high-speed front-axle oscillation that turns a bump into a steering-wheel shake severe enough to require braking to a near stop. Chrysler updated the steering damper as a partial mitigation, not a full fix.

Engine complaints at 949 and transmission at 499 spread across the JL lineup. The 3.6L Pentastar V6 (1,095 complaints, 11 fires) is the highest-volume non-4xe engine and shows roughly a 1% fire-per-complaint rate. The 2.0L turbo with eTorque mild hybrid (752 complaints, 12 fires) runs higher at 1.6%. The 3.0L EcoDiesel, offered through 2023, has only 138 complaints but 9 of those are fires, a 6.5% rate that outpaces every other engine in the lineup and warrants extra scrutiny for used buyers. The 6.4L 392 V8 (Rubicon only) shows 11 complaints, too few for a meaningful read. Suspension complaints at 363 round out the top five categories and overlap heavily with the steering pattern.

The JL Wrangler is a buying decision people make for off-road capability, removable roof and doors, and the segment-defining brand. None of that has changed. What has changed is the realistic ownership expectation: a buyer who treats it as a daily commuter and expects RAV4-grade reliability is shopping the wrong vehicle. A buyer who accepts the trade-off, prioritizes the 3.6L Pentastar V6 over the 4xe or the EcoDiesel, and inspects service records for steering work has a better shot at a Wrangler that holds up.

Known issues

High
Wrangler 4xe / Grand Cherokee 4xe traction-battery fire-risk recall: 2021-2023 Wrangler 4xe (NHTSA 23V-787, park-outside) and 2020-2025 Wrangler 4xe / 2022-2026 Grand Cherokee 4xe (NHTSA 25V-741, also park-outside) — both warned owners not to charge until repair. Stellantis has issued multiple firmware and module-replacement remedies.
High
2022-2023 Wrangler 4xe earlier traction-battery recall (NHTSA 22V-768) covered a separate HV-pack issue with a free dealer remedy.
Low
Real-world all-electric range falls short of EPA estimates in cold weather and at highway speeds, similar to all PHEVs. Hybrid mode reverts cleanly when pack depletes.
Owner-fleet data

How this pack ages (industry context)

Industry fleet aggregates: 2.3% average annual capacity loss across 22,700 EVs / 21 models (Geotab, 2026), and 95% range retention at 5 years on average across 30,000+ vehicles (Recurrent, 2026).

OEM warranty floor on this pack: 10 yr / 100k mi to 70% capacity.

Public per-pack degradation curves are not available for most models. Individual results vary materially with climate, charging behavior, and DC fast-charge frequency.

Buyer's Guide

For the JL generation, the conservative used-market choice is the 3.6L Pentastar V6 in non-4xe trim, model year 2020 or later. The Pentastar's 1,095 complaints produce a fire-per-complaint rate near 1%, the best of any JL engine with meaningful volume. The early-production 2018-2019 cars carried weld-defect recalls on the steering shaft and front track bar bracket that have since been remedied but show up in the complaint history. The 4xe PHEV remains compelling for buyers who want electric-only torque on trails, but four high-voltage battery recalls tied to fire risk across the 2020-2025 production run mean any 4xe under consideration needs verified recall remedy completion on every campaign. The EcoDiesel deserves extra inspection: its 6.5% fire-per-complaint rate is the highest in the lineup and concentrates on fuel-system and powertrain components.

Three inspections matter most before signing. Drive the Wrangler above 55 mph on broken pavement and watch for the front-axle steering oscillation that defines the death wobble pattern, and ask whether the steering damper has been updated to the current specification. Pull the VIN through the NHTSA recall lookup and confirm every open campaign is closed, paying particular attention to the high-voltage battery recalls on 4xe trim. Inspect for body corrosion on the rear underbody ladder rail (subject of a 2018 recall) and verify the door latches operate cleanly on four-door cars.

The current-production years overlap the used market, so cross-shopping a used 3.6L Sport S or Sahara against a new base Wrangler is a real comparison rather than a vintage trade-off. The Wrangler holds value above the segment average, which works against used buyers but in favor of anyone who buys new and plans to trade inside three years.
