Reliability Overview

The DT-generation Ram 1500 launched for 2019 as a clean-sheet redesign on Chrysler's new full-size truck architecture, replacing the long-running DS that had been on sale since 2009. Across seven model years, NHTSA has logged 10,636 complaints, 42 recall campaigns, 468 crash reports, 80 fire reports, 282 injuries, and 4 fatalities. That recall count is unusually high for a current-generation truck. Toyota and Honda full-size models from the same period typically run a fraction of that total. Buyers should treat the recall density as the headline number on this generation, not the raw complaint total.

Engine-level data on the DT in this dataset is sparse. Only the 3.6L Pentastar V6 with eTorque mild-hybrid (2020-2022) has enough bucketed complaints (22) to support a per-engine reading, and on that variant it earns a "recommended" rating with a score of 3.9. The other engine variants used on the DT (V8s including the supercharged Hellcat in the TRX, and the diesel V6) don't have meaningful per-engine complaint counts attached in NHTSA's bucketed data, so engine-by-engine reliability comparisons aren't supportable.

Where vehicle-level patterns can be read, electrical issues lead at 11 bucketed complaints, followed by interior (6) and transmission (3). These bucketed counts are a small fraction of the 10,636-complaint total and reflect a known data-pipeline limitation rather than a "things are fine" signal. The recall list is more diagnostic: visibility (12-inch touchscreen), the 48-volt auxiliary battery, service brakes on adjustable-pedal trucks, steering (battery ground fastener), and structural issues on accessory rear step kits all appear among the early DT recall campaigns. Buyers shopping a used DT should pull the VIN-specific recall history before committing.

The 80 fire reports across seven model years is a cluster that warrants attention. The dataset doesn't isolate the specific powertrain or wiring conditions driving the fires, but the volume is meaningful in absolute terms for a full-size truck and aligns with multiple electrical and battery-related recalls on this generation.

The DT is a current-production truck, so the reliability picture will keep evolving as more years accumulate. Buyers ordering new should treat the recall responsiveness of their selling dealer as part of the ownership math.

Buyer's Guide

For DT shoppers, the safest specific recommendation the dataset supports is the 2020-2022 3.6L Pentastar V6 with eTorque, which sits at the dataset's "recommended" rating with a score of 3.9. The Hemi V8 trucks, the diesel V6, and the Hellcat-powered TRX don't have enough variant-level data in NHTSA's bucketed records to support an engine-specific call. Reliability assessment on those powertrains has to come from outside the federal complaint dataset.

The single most important first step on a used DT is a VIN-keyed recall lookup at nhtsa.gov/recalls. With 42 campaigns across seven model years, the odds that an individual truck has open recall work are not negligible. Verify whether the 12-inch touchscreen visibility recall, the 48-volt auxiliary battery campaign, and the steering ground-fastener recall have been completed before signing anything.

Beyond recall completion, prioritize the brake system on adjustable-pedal trucks (a recall topic), inspect for any prior fire-related insurance history given the 80 fire reports across the generation, and confirm electrical accessory function across a full 30-minute drive cycle. The eTorque mild-hybrid system in particular adds wiring complexity that is worth verifying through warning-light behavior at startup and during regenerative braking transitions.
