Reliability Overview

The 4th-gen Ford Super Duty (2017-2022, F-250 through F-550) carries 4,806 NHTSA complaints, 62 recall campaigns, 61 fire reports, and 69 crash reports across its six-year run. The story splits cleanly along engine lines once the data is de-duplicated. The 6.7L Power Stroke diesel accounts for 3,511 of those complaints and 56 of the 61 fires, making it the dominant signal in the dataset and the load-bearing data point in any used-truck inspection.

Steering issues lead the vehicle-level weakness list at 2,504 complaints, more than half the generation total. Suspension follows at 2,021. The two categories overlap on the same failure mode: the front-end oscillation owners and truck communities call "death wobble," a violent shake at highway speed triggered by a road imperfection that does not damp out without slowing the truck. The 4th-gen retained the solid front axle architecture of the prior generation, and on a heavy-duty rig the convergence of track-bar wear, ball-joint play, and tire balance produces a more dramatic version of the same instability that troubles solid-axle Wranglers. Ford issued an explicit September 2025 recall (25V626) on 2020-2021 F-250/F-350/F-450 trucks for a steering-column upper shaft that can detach from the column and result in a loss of steering control, a separate failure mode in the same category.

The 6.7L Power Stroke fire count (56 of 61) tracks to the CP4 high-pressure fuel pump story. Ford's December 2024 recall (24V957) covered 2020-2022 6.7L trucks for biodiesel deposits forming on the pump drivetrain roller components, which can lead to pump failure. The fix was inadequate. In March 2026, Ford re-recalled the same trucks (26V158) for being repaired incorrectly the first time. A failed CP4 pump can scatter metal through the fuel system and run into five figures of repair cost, which is why the diesel rates avoid in the database despite carrying the brunt of the truck's working-fleet duty cycle.

The 6.2L gas V8 (2017-2019) shows 1,018 complaints, 2 fires, and a caution rating. The 7.3L Godzilla gas V8 (2020-2022) shows 192 complaints, 3 fires, and an avoid rating driven by transmission and engine complaint density rather than the catastrophic fire pattern of the diesel. The Godzilla's smaller dataset reflects its three-year availability window, not better field reliability than the older 6.2L. Both gas engines pull from the same vehicle-level steering and suspension complaint pool that defines this generation.

The 62 recall total deserves context. Roughly a third of those campaigns are upfitter or ambulance-builder recalls (Whelen brake lights, ASA Voyager backup-camera monitors, body-builder issues on F-450/F-550 chassis cabs) that do not apply to a buyer of a stock pickup. The Ford-issued consumer-facing count is closer to 40, which is still high. Many cluster around the 360-degree rearview camera system (multiple recalls across 22V644, 22V252, 25V048, 25V686), the door latches, and front-axle hub-extender fasteners on dual-rear-wheel trucks. The 2019 incorrect-transmission-case-casting recall (18V802) on F-250/F-350/F-450 was the most consequential single powertrain campaign.

Buyer's Guide

The 4th-gen Super Duty buyer is usually picking between the 6.7L Power Stroke diesel and the 7.3L Godzilla gas V8 (2020-2022 only) or the older 6.2L gas V8 (2017-2019). The diesel carries 73% of the generation's complaint volume and 92% of the fires, and it sits in the middle of an unresolved CP4 fuel-pump recall loop that Ford has now attempted twice. For buyers who do not need the diesel's tow rating, the 7.3L Godzilla is the lower-fire-risk pick in 2020-2022 trucks. The 6.2L gas V8 in 2017-2019 trucks rates caution and carries lower per-engine complaint density than the diesel.

Inspection priorities before buying any 4th-gen Super Duty: Steering and front end: drive the truck at 55-70 mph on broken pavement and watch for any front-axle oscillation or wandering. Check the track-bar bushings, ball joints, and tie-rod ends for play. Confirm the 25V626 steering-column shaft recall on 2020-2021 trucks is closed via VIN at recalls.nhtsa.dot.gov. Fuel system (diesel): verify both the 24V957 and 26V158 high-pressure-fuel-pump campaigns are closed (the re-recall matters because the first remedy was wrong) and ask whether the truck has run on biodiesel blends above B20. Hub extenders (dual-rear-wheel): confirm 21V390 and 23V758 are closed on 2021 and 2022-2023 trucks. Rearview camera: cycle the 360-degree system through all views and check VIN against the four separate camera-system recalls.

Used pricing on 4th-gen Super Duty trucks stays high because the heavy-duty segment holds value, which means a truck with open campaigns or unknown service history carries more downside risk than a buyer typically prices in. A clean truck with all consumer-facing recalls closed and documented service history can be the right buy for a working operator. A truck with an open 26V158 CP4 remedy is a fuel-system failure waiting on a calendar.
