The 2025 Kia Sorento PHEV SX-Prestige AWD emerges as a compelling fusion of efficiency, luxury, and versatility. The Sorento PHEV doesn’t just represent another entry in the crowded SUV market, it showcases Kia’s commitment to electrification without compromising on the practicality and comfort that families demand.

With its sleek exterior design and promise of up to 32 miles of all-electric range, this vehicle aims to bridge the gap between daily commutes and weekend adventures, all while keeping a watchful eye on fuel consumption and environmental impact.

Asย I embarked on aย journey from the bustling streets of Sacramento toย San Jose,ย this plug-in hybrid three-row SUV promised toย redefine my expectations of what a family vehicle could be.

Over the course of a week, from navigating rush-hour traffic to exploring off-the-beaten-path parks awash in autumn colors, I set out to put the Sorento PHEV through its paces, determined to uncover whether this electrified Kia could live up to its ambitious promises.

Thus, my evaluation of Kia’s PHEV began with a trip to the San Jose region in the Bay Area.

Driving Experiences

Departing Sacramento, the Sorento PHEV’s 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, combined with its electric motor, delivered a smooth and responsive 261 horsepower.ย The transition between electric and gasoline power was nearly imperceptible, a testament to Kia’s refined hybrid technology.

As I merged onto I-80 West, I engaged the adaptive cruise control, part of Kia’s Navigation-Based Smart Cruise Control system.ย The vehicle effortlessly maintained a safe distance from other cars, even as traffic ebbed and flowed. The lane-keeping assist provided gentle corrections, reducing fatigue during the long drive.

Parking in busy downtown areas can be challenging, especially with the holiday bustling, but the Sorento’s 360ยฐ Surround View Monitor made it a breeze.ย The system provided a bird’s-eye view of the vehicle, allowing me to navigate tight spaces with confidence.

The available Blind-Spot View Monitor was equally impressive, displaying a live video feed of my blind spots in the digital gauge cluster when I activated the turn signal.

Later in the week, I took the Sorento PHEV to a nearby state park to enjoy the vibrant fall foliage. The standard all-wheel drive system with center-locking differential proved its worth on the unpaved park roads.ย

The X-Line trim’s increased ground clearance and more rugged styling would be even better suited for more adventurous off-road excursions.

During my return trip to Sacramento, I encountered heavy traffic and more than plenty erratic drivers. The Sorento’s comprehensive suite of safety features, including Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist and Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist, provided an extra layer of security.ย

These systems worked unobtrusively in the background, only intervening when necessary to prevent potential collisions.

The Sorento PHEV SX-Prestige’s interior is a blend of comfort and technology. The 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system create a modern, tech-forward cockpit.ย

The Bose premium audio system filled the cabin with rich, clear sound, making long drives more enjoyable.

The three-row layout offers versatility, though the third row is best suited for children or occasional adult use. With the third row folded, cargo space is ample for weekend getaways or grocery runs.

The 2025 Sorento PHEV is available in two trim levels:

  1. SX ($49,990 MSRP)
  2. SX-Prestige ($53,990 MSRP)

The SX-Prestige adds luxury features like a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, Bose premium audio, and a surround-view monitor.

The Sorento PHEV is packed with advanced technology. The UVO link connected car system allows for remote start, climate control, and vehicle location services via smartphone.ย

The available 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 10.25-inch touchscreen provide crisp, clear information and entertainment options.

The Sorento PHEV offers a spacious interior with high-quality materials. The SX-Prestige trim features genuine leather seat trim and a premium headliner.ย

The second-row captain’s chairs slide and recline for optimal comfort, while the third row splits 50/50 for flexible cargo arrangements.

The Sorento PHEV SX-Prestige AWD features a more powerful plug-in hybrid system:

  • 1.6L turbocharged four-cylinder engine + electric motor
  • Total system output: 261 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque
  • 6-speed automatic transmission
  • Standard all-wheel drive

In contrast, the Sorento Hybrid has a less powerful traditional hybrid powertrain:

  • 1.6L turbocharged four-cylinder engine + electric motor
  • Total system output: 227 horsepower
  • 6-speed automatic transmission
  • Available in front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive configurations

The PHEV model offers significant electric-only driving capability:

  • Estimated 32 miles of all-electric range
  • 79 MPGe combined

The standard Hybrid doesn’t have a plug-in capability but still offers improved efficiency over the non-hybrid Sorento.

The PHEV is available in two trim levels:

  • EX: $49,990 MSRP
  • SX-Prestige: $53,990 MSRP

The Hybrid is offered in more trim options:

  • EX
  • SX Prestige

Exact pricing for the Hybrid trims may vary, but they are generally less expensive than their PHEV counterparts.

While both models offer premium features in their top trims, the PHEV SX-Prestige AWD includes some additional amenities:

  • Standard all-wheel drive
  • 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster
  • Bose premium audio system
  • Surround-view monitor
  • Blind-spot view monitor
  • Enhanced forward collision mitigation and adaptive cruise control systems2

The Hybrid SX Prestige shares many features with the PHEV but may lack some of the more advanced driver assistance systems.

Due to the larger battery pack, the PHEV model may have slightly less cargo space compared to the standard Hybrid.
