Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Mazda in massive global airbag recall

Toyota, Honda, Nissan and Mitsubishi combined will recall more than three million vehicles dating to 2000 and for an often-repeated, recent-year auto industry woe — defected safety equipment. The latest crisis involves airbag inflators made by Takata, the Japanese safety gear producer. Takata made the products from 2000 to 2002. It’s the biggest recall involving Takata since 1995, when several automakers called back a then-record almost nine million vehicles to replace faulty seat belts made by the Japanese company. “It looks like the cost of the recalls may be pretty big,” Satoru Takada, a Tokyo-based analyst at Toward the Infinite World Inc., referring to Takata, told Reuters. “It doesn’t seem like something that would be easy to identify and fix.

Mitsubishi Lancer 2013: tame to wild and unheralded

The Mitsubishi Lancer compact four-door sedan and hatchback come in models ranging from a tame 148-horsepower model to a crossfire-hurricane 291-horsepower version called the “Evolution,” which car buffs love. The often-overlooked Lancer was Mitsubishi’s second best-selling model in America in 2012, behind the Outlander Sport SUV. Most Americans don’t realize Mitsubishi is a huge conglomerate that sells vehicles throughout the world and that it’s an innovative outfit. Mitsubishi’s tough race/rally cars were among the world’s championship cars. Mitsubishi pulled out of world rally competition about seven years ago, although development continues for production classes that keep its race-bred Lancer Evolution model a feared performer. List prices for Lancer sedans and hatchbacks range from $15,995 to $34,695. Besides the top-line race-style

2013 Mitsubishi i: Inexpensive, economical, strange name

The oddly named Mitsubishi i—also known as the i-MiEV—is probably unknown to most Americans. Even regular gas-engine models from this automaker aren’t given much promotion. The i four-door hatchback was introduced as a 2012 model and was offered only in a few U.S. markets—Hawaii and on the West Coast. The U.S. version is wider to better suit American occupants, and is the lowest-cost all-electric car sold in the country. The i has served tens of thousands of drivers throughout the world, including many motorists in Japan. Mitsubishi says it has had four decades of experience designing and developing 100 percent battery powered vehicles. The 2013 i is a carryover model from 2012. I expected it to be essentially an in-town

Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, 2012: Overlooked, sporty SUV warrants attention

“Mitsubishi” and “often-overlooked” long have belonged in the same sentence. The automaker lacks the advertising firepower, dealer number and model-loaded product line of better-known nameplates in America. But Mitsubishi has come up with innovative models, and so what if its vehicles aren’t on everyone’s shopping list? Some folks don’t want to drive the same vehicles they see al the time, which include Outlander Sport rivals Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4. Don’t confuse the aggressively styled Outlander Sport with the larger Mitsubishi Outlander. For instance, compared to the Outlander, it’s more than a foot shorter and doesn’t have a third-row seat. However, they share the same 105.1-inch wheelbase. At approximately 3,000 pounds, the Outlander Sport is one of the lightest vehicles

Mitsubishi Lancer, 2012: Unheralded entry level sedan offers good value

Mitsubishi is at a disadvantage against better-known competitors such as the Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic because it lacks their volume and promotional firepower. Because of that you might find Mitsubishi dealers more willing to deal than those selling rival cars. The 2012 Mitsubishi Lancer has lots to offer. For one thing, it’s sleeker than some popular rivals. Most Lancers have front-wheel drive, but a race-proven all-wheel-drive system, called “All-Wheel Control,” is offered for some models. The wide variety of models have list prices ranging from $15.695 to $37,695, although most have prices that don’t top $21,000. Prices and models go from the base $15,695 DE front-drive sedan with a 2-liter, 148-horsepower four-cylinder that’s noisy when pushed to the ferocious

Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, 2012: Compact SUV keenly appointed, needs power

Now in its third generation and more than 20 years old, the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport is the compact version of the larger and older Outlander. Specifically, it’s 14 inches shorter, 2 inches lower about 700 pounds lighter than its sibling. The current generation debuted in 2010 and for 2012 there are only minor changes — the available of a rearview camera for the base SE trim, additional sound insulation for models with a continuously variable transmission and a recalibration of the transmission to improve response and acceleration. The Weekly Driver Test Drive Available in two trims, I test drove the SE all-wheel drive model, but the Outlander Sport is also available in two-wheel drive. Both models have automatic transmissions. Hyundai tops Mitsubishi for best car warranty honors

Keith Buglewicz, a writer for DriverSide.com, has compiled an exhaustive list of car warranties and has determined that Hyundai offers the best overall automotive warranty among automobiles offered in the United States. The author writer of Hyundai: “When you see those Hyundai commercials touting the country’s best warranty, well, they’re not lying. Hyundai’s powertrain warranty is equaled in years by Mitsubishi and Kia – and in miles by several others, and Kia and Mitsubishi also offer just as long a period from bumper-to-bumper. “Mitsubishi even ties Hyundai with its roadside assistance. But Hyundai beats out Mitsubishi on two fronts. First, it offers unlimited mileage on its corrosion protection package. Second, it applies to all Hyundai models, including the sporty Genesis

Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, 2011 car review

The 2011 Mitsubishi compact Outlander Sport SUV/crossover isn’t as racy as it looks with its so-so four-cylinder engine. But it has decent prices, handy size, many features and good fuel economy. The five-passenger Outlander Sport is more of a crossover vehicle than an SUV. It’s based on Mitsubishi’s larger seven-passenger Outlander SUV. But it doesn’t have its big brother’s third-row seat and is more than a foot shorter with chopped front and rear overhangs, although it’s much closer in width and height. Wheelbase is the same at 105.1 inches, but the Outlander Sport is lighter feels sportier. The base version with an automatic transmission only weighs 3,098 pounds, which makes the Outlander Sport among the lightest in its class. This
