Range Rover Previewed the GT Without a Single Specification

Range Rover confirmed a fifth model line on July 22. The release named it the GT, described a grand tourer with coupé proportions, placed production at Halewood in Merseyside, and opened the cabin to photographers for the first time. It carried no battery capacity, range figure, power output, price, or on-sale date.

Those numbers are circulating anyway. Electrek projected a pack above 100 kWh and range close to 500 miles, and separately put a US starting price near $90,000 against an EPA range of at least 300 miles. The Drive was more candid about the method behind its own version: “I’m guessing they’re targeting 300-plus miles and a 3.0-ish 0 to 60 sprint.”

JLR did brief some figures to journalists at a preview event without putting them in writing, which is how outlets came away with an 800-volt architecture, a 350 kW charging peak and a 97-liter front trunk. Range, power and price were not among them.

Ryan Miller, the company’s global product and service marketing director, told Forbes: “We’d love to share a bit more, but we know the rest of the story, and it’s equally compelling. We look forward to sharing that later in the year.”

What the Release Confirms

JLR’s confirmed list is short. The GT joins the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Velar, and Evoque as a fifth family member. It is a grand tourer with what JLR calls a sleek silhouette and coupé proportions. It is the first Range Rover on the company’s Electrified Modular Architecture, and it will be built at Halewood on lines that also run combustion and hybrid models. It arrives as a battery-electric vehicle, with a full hybrid option planned later in the lifecycle.

Martin Limpert, managing director of Range Rover, put it this way: “The result is the most car-like, yet unmistakably capable, Range Rover ever created, now possible on our electrified EMA architecture.”

Camouflage got its own paragraph. JLR’s in-house team designed the wrap around topographic contours of the countryside surrounding Gaydon, rendered as a flowing gold pattern. Manufacturers rarely explain their disguise graphics. This one comes with a design brief.

The Cabin Is the Only Thing on Show

JLR describes the interior as reductive, built around a single screen paired with a slim driver display in place of an instrument cluster. A concealed air vent runs the full width of the dashboard. Woven textile wraps the fascia in one gesture and hides the speakers inside its form. Reduced visual and acoustic noise is the stated goal.

JLR says it built the cabin for “natural conversational access to more vehicle functions than ever before.” That is a voice-control commitment, and it arrives alongside a layout that moves climate into a touch bar at the base of the central display.

JLR already has a record on this. TWD’s week with a 2026 Range Rover SE SWB P400 found Pivi Pro inconsistent in exactly the ways a screen-first cabin punishes: hard-press haptics that needed a second attempt, back buttons that behaved differently depending on the menu, and a display that ran hot at idle in cold rain. The GT answers that with fewer switches and more talking.

It also lands in the middle of a regulatory shift. Euro NCAP’s 2026 protocol awards points for putting nine functions on physical controls, climate among them, and Mercedes has publicly reversed course toward hard keys. JLR is walking the other way.

Behind Two Electric Range Rovers That Are Already Late

JLR set out the sequence at its June investor day, describing five new products over the following two years: the full-size Range Rover Electric, then the Range Rover Sport Electric, then two EMA cars and the Jaguar Type 01.

That places the GT among the EMA cars. Two electric Range Rovers ahead of it sit on MLA, a different architecture, and come out of Solihull rather than Halewood. Neither shares the GT’s platform or its plant.

The full-size car’s schedule is the closest thing to a track record JLR has on electric Range Rovers.

Signing up for that list costs nothing and commits nobody to a deposit. It measures interest rather than orders.

The July release gave no date at all. Trade coverage put production in the first half of 2027 within a day of the preview, and on the Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles first-quarter earnings call in August, where JLR reports its results, the GT was placed in early 2027 alongside the Jaguar Type 01.

EMA Has Changed Direction Twice

The platform under the GT has been redefined twice since JLR first described it.

In 2021 the Electrified Modular Architecture was outlined as a platform built for electric cars that could also take plug-in and full hybrids. Two years later then-chief executive Adrian Mardell narrowed it: “EMA is our next architecture for medium-size vehicles. Originally conceived to be hybrid, it’s now only going to be fully electrified.” In June 2026 JLR widened it again, announcing that the coming Range Rover EMA model would offer a full hybrid option and framing the change as propulsion flexibility.

The GT arrives as the first Range Rover on an architecture that has spent roughly three of its five announced years designated electric-only.

Where a Fifth Range Rover Would Sit

JLR has not confirmed the GT for the United States. A US configurator page exists and collects email addresses, but every image on it is captioned “European Model Shown” and the page states the vehicle is not available for sale.

The gap it would fill is visible in current US pricing.

Sport to full-size is a $29,600 step, and destination adds $1,850 to the first and $2,450 to the second. That is the space a fifth model line has to occupy. The $90,000 figure attached to the GT in coverage is an estimate belonging to Electrek, and JLR has published nothing to confirm or contradict it.

What Has to Happen First

Two constraints sit between the GT and American driveways.

One is volume. Chief executive P.B. Balaji told analysts in August that JLR is “tentatively pencilling in about 12,000 cars this year in the EV space.” Chief financial officer Richard Molyneux framed the strategy more bluntly on the same call: “We’re not launching mass-market EVs. We’re launching Range Rovers with an EV powertrain.”

Another is the border. Under the US-UK trade arrangement effective June 30, 2025, the first 100,000 UK-built vehicles entering the United States each calendar year carry a 10% tariff. Above that quota the rate goes to 27.5%. The UK shipped roughly 102,000 vehicles to the US in 2024, so the quota was set at about the existing volume with no room above it.

Every Range Rover is built in Britain, which means a Halewood-built GT competes for the same allowance as everything coming out of Solihull.

The Preview Is the Product for Now

What JLR has confirmed about the Range Rover GT is a name, a shape, a platform, a plant, and an interior. What it has not confirmed is everything a buyer would use to decide. Anyone quoting a range figure, a power output, or a price today is quoting a magazine, not a manufacturer.

JLR says more details arrive later in 2026. That is the moment to judge the car. Until then the honest position is that a fifth Range Rover exists, it is electric, it is being built in Merseyside, and it is standing behind two other electric Range Rovers that have already taught buyers what a JLR launch date is worth.
