Geneva Motor Show: Jaguar debuts hybrid concept B99

The Jaguar B 99, a new concept car from Bertone, one of the world’s oldest design brands, will have its world premiere March 3-13 at the Geneva Motor Show. Carmel Concours on the Avenue is back, set for August 16

Monterey Auto Week 2011 in August, the yearly collection of car shows, vintage races, auctions and memorabilia, will also include the return of one of its unheralded, grand events — the Concours on the Avenue. According to a report in the Carmel Pine Cone, the car show presented on Ocean Ave. and various side streets in downtown Carmel, will be held August 16. The weekly newspaper reports owners Doug and Genie Freedman believe the daylong show will feature 175 collectible American and European cars and motorcycles from 1940 to 1989. The event was canceled in 2010 for lack of sponsorship and after a last-ditch effort by Carmel city officials to raise $200,000 from local businesses failed. “We’re excited,” Doug Freedman

Qatar Motor Show debuts with Bentley to Bertone concepts

Like any good auto show, the inaugural Qatar Motor Show, beginning January 26, will have its share of concept cars. The offerings will be presented by established manufacturers like Volkswagen and its futuristic-looking XL1 diesel-electric. But there will will also be concepts from unique carmakers like Autostudi, Bertone and Castagna. One stunning concept will be the Bentley Continental Flying Star offered by Touring Supperleggera, in conjunction with Bentley and manufactured in Milan. The limited edition supercar is custom built by the same group that created the Ferrari 166 and the Aston Martin DB 4/5. Honda Civic 2012 creates more buzz at Detroit Auto Show

The buzz around the 2012 Honda Civic concept has continued at the Detroit Auto Show, with the ninth generation of the fourth best-selling car in the United States giving the Japanese manufacturer hope of a sales resurgence. Honda has been a top-seller manufacturer for many years, particularly based on the stalwart category leaders Accord and Civic. But three Honda models — the CR-Z hybrid coupe, Accord Crosstour hatchback and Insight hybrid — all had disappointing sales in 2010. Chevy Volt, Ford Explorer take Detroit Auto Show top honors

The Chevrolet Volt plug-in electric car and Ford Explorer claimed top honors as the North American car and truck of the years honors at the Detroit Auto Show. The Volt, the General Motors’ centerpiece contribution to the advancing green car industry, has already earned the 2011 Green Car of the Year and Motor Trend Magazine’s Car of the Year. Ferrari World iconic theme park set for early opening in Abu Dhabi

The much-talked about, long-anticipated Ferrari World, the world’s largest indoor theme park, will open Oct. 27 — one day earlier than expected — in Abu Dhabi, capital of the United Arab Emirates. Ferrari World is the only theme park dedicated to the renowned racing cars and features the world’s fastest roller coaster, Formula Rossa, which can hit top speeds of up to 150 mph. Sixteen vehicles were sold for more than $1 million, the most recorded by any single auction house during this year’s Monterey auto week. Bugatti, new and vintage, rule at Monterey Auto Week

The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport, the latest model to join the Veyron lineup, debuted at the Concours d’Elegance. The new model includes a 1,200 horsepower engine and a limited speed 257 mph (in order to protect the tires). Bugatti was also the marque for the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Vintage Bugatti vintage machines competed in various divisions during the three-day event and were also featured in a parade at The Quail: A Motorsports Gathering at Quail Lodge. A one-hour Speed TV special on the 2010 Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, including Buggati footage, is scheduled Sept. 17, at 8 p.m. (ET) The show will re-air at 1 a.m. Sept. 18, Sept. 24 at 1 p.m.

Concours on the Avenue in Carmel canceled for 2010

Concours on the Avenue, the free, hip and arguably most enjoyable component of Monterey Auto Week, has been canceled this year due to what owners call an “insurmountable financial gap.” “It’s suspended for 2010, but we have every hope that the momentum that we lose can somehow be regained,” said Doug Friedman who ran the show with his wife. “We’re eternally optimistic, even at this tough moment. Tata Motors debuts electric vehicle Nano EV at Geneva Motor Show

Built in cooperation with the Norwegian electric car specialist firm Miljoebil Grenland, in which Tata Motors acquired a majority stake in 2008, the Nano EV,  is a four-seater electric car with a range of about 80 miles. It  can accelerate from zero to about 35 miles per hour in 10 seconds. The car is powered by super-polymer lithium-ion batteries, which provides superior energy retention. When launched, it will expand the company’s electric vehicles portfolio, which also includes the Tata Indica Vista EV, based on the new generation Tata Indica Vista.
