A new vehicle joins a cellular network the same way a phone does. It carries a modem, a subscriber identity, a data plan and a billing relationship, and it hauls all of that down Highway 401 at 100 km/h. What has changed is how little of the car’s personality still lives inside the car.

Seat position, mirror angles, climate presets, navigation favorites, charge history and infotainment layout now sit on a manufacturer’s server. BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi and Tesla have each pushed cloud-stored driver profiles far enough that the settings can follow a driver into a second vehicle wearing the same badge.

What survives a switch of screens

Most of what a driver sees after the car recognizes them is stored on the automaker’s servers rather than in the head unit. Profile settings, service history, charge sessions, trip logs and subscription status all live upstream.

This architecture allows a phone, tablet or desktop browser to retrieve the same record. The limitation is that account continuity does not always mean session continuity.

Static preferences travel well because they are values waiting to be applied. A seat position is a number. A climate preset is a number. Anything running in real time is harder to hand off, including a navigation route mid-turn, a paused podcast, a charging session already underway, or a call routed through the car’s microphones. Some of those resume cleanly on the next screen. Some start over.

The practical distinction is between persistent account data and persistent session state. The first is common. The second depends on the feature.

The hotspot changed who is using the connection

For most of the connected-car era the data plan served the driver. Live traffic, map tiles, over-the-air updates, remote start from the phone app. The in-vehicle hotspot moved the benefit to the second row.

Passengers on a long drive do what they would do on a couch. Streaming, messaging, shopping, and for some of them, gaming. On Bell’s Freedom plan, carrying the hotspot into the United States or Mexico adds $13 a day. The prepaid plans include no roaming at all, so a hotspot that worked in Windsor is inert in Detroit while the car itself behaves exactly as it did an hour earlier.

Regulated gambling draws a harder line than any carrier does. Ontario operators must confirm a player is physically inside the province before real-money wagering is permitted, so a driver who leaves Ontario keeps the account, the balance and the transaction history, and loses the ability to bet.
