Ford set to auction Apollo-themed 2015 Mustang

A 2015 Aviation-Themed Ford Mustang will be auction by EAA.

For the eighth straight year, Ford Motor Company has created an aviation-inspired 2015 Ford Mustang and will feature it as the premier item auctioned live at the Experimental Aircraft Association benefit at the Gathering of Eagles charity event July 23.

The EAA AirVenture Oshkosh — the World’s Greatest Aviation Celebration — will be held July 20-26 at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. For is the exclusive automobile sponsor of the event.

All proceeds from the sale of the car will benefit EAA youth education programs, including the Young Eagles, which has provided free introductory flights to more than 1.9 million young people since 1992, helping grow the next generation of aviators.

“The Apollo program delivered astonishing innovations in technology and achieved a national goal of landing the first human on the moon,” said Edsel B. Ford II, a member of the Ford board of directors. “The entire program was extraordinary – one of our nation’s greatest technological achievements. With this year’s stunning Apollo Edition Mustang, we salute that spirit of American ingenuity with the quintessential American automobile – Ford Mustang.”

The unique Mustang to be auctioned at Oshkosh draws its design cues from NASA’s Apollo program that successfully sent and returned men to the moon. Ford Design Manager Melvin Betancourt led the design and engineering teams that developed this unique car.

“The Ford Apollo Edition Mustang salutes man’s greatest technological achievement, with the ingenuity, precision, and power that defined the spirit of American innovation,” said Edsel B. Ford II, a member of the Ford Board of Directors. “Inspired by the Apollo program, Ford Motor Company committed itself to including exhilarating power, cutting-edge technology, and extraordinary craftsmanship in this automobile, which will support the next generation of pilots in EAA’s aviation education programs for young people.”

The EAA Gathering of Eagles is held annually at the EAA AirVenture Museum, drawing more than 1,000 aviation enthusiasts who support the aviators, engineers, and flight professionals of tomorrow.
