Chrysler will make an all-electric version of Fiat’s famed 500 Cinquecento small car for North American distribution beginning in 2012.Che third-biggest North American carmaker and now controlled by Fiat, will introduce a gasoline version of the 500 made in Mexico for U.S. distribution later this year.
The zero-emission 500EV will be powered by new-generation lithium-ion batteries being developed in Michigan. A prototype was unveiled at this year’s Detroit Auto Show.
Nissan’s Leaf all-electric car, also powered by lithium-ion batteries, will also debut in the U.S. from manufacturing facilities in Japan and Tennessee.
