Uber Will Pay You to Stop Driving For a Month

Uber has announced a bold new initiative aimed at reducing car ownership in cities worldwide. Dubbed the “One Less Car” challenge, this program encourages residents in select cities to ditch their personal vehicles for a month, opting instead for public transportation, ridesharing, biking, and walking. Uber, Lyft suspend group rideshares nationwide

Uber and Lyft, the country’s two largest rideshare companies, have both suspended their group rideshare services in response to increasing coronavirus concerns. “Our goal is to help flatten the curve of community spread in the cities we serve,” said Andrew Macdonald, an Uber executive. “We remain in close contact with local leaders and will continue to work with them to discourage nonessential travel.” Uber and Lyft will continue to offer single-passenger rides. Uber halts self-driving program after pedestrian fatality

The Uber autonomous driving program has been suspended after a 49-year-old woman in Tempe, Arizona, was killed after she was hit by a car as she crossed the street. Self-driving cars have been involved in multiple accidents, but the pedestrian fatality is believed to be the first in the autonomous realm. Uber said it had ceased its autonomous program throughout North America. The accident, according to law enforcement accounts, occurred late in the evening on March 19 when the vehicle was autonomous mode. The vehicle also had a driver.
