The Secret Experiences of Monterey Car Week 2025

While Monterey Car Week’s public events capture global attention, the automotive world’s most coveted experiences unfold behind gated driveways and within private estates scattered across the Peninsula. These invitation-only gatherings, whispered about on social media and accessible only to industry insiders and loyal customers of luxury car manufacturers represent the true pinnacle of automotive exclusivity. Beyond the manicured lawns of Pebble Beach lies a parallel universe of secret events that automotive journalists and social media accounts only hint at in cryptic posts. These gatherings operate on an unspoken hierarchy where access depends less on wealth and more on relationships within the collector community. From Range Rover’s hillside mansion transformations to Ferrari’s private villa celebrations, dubbed Casa Ferrari, the Peninsula becomes

Liberty Walk Autozam AZ-1 is a Ferrari Fan’s Dream Come True

A $40,000 Ferrari F40 would be any auto enthusiast’s dream, and Japanese tuner Liberty Walk is making it a reality — almost. Liberty Walk took the wraps off of a heavily modified F40 lookalike, based on an Autozam AZ-1, at the 2024 Tokyo Auto Salon last Friday. The kit is officially titled the LB Works LB40 AZ-1 and buyers can pick one up for $36,960, a fraction of an F40’s $2M price tag. Liberty Walk has been on the car scene since 1993 and is renowned for taking unassuming sports cars and turning them into something of their own. This often includes almost cartoonish designs shaped by extremes: the widest fenders, largest wings, and lowest suspension. Enthusiasts of this Japanese

Ferrari SF90 XX debuts as automaker’s most powerful road car

Ferrari’s SF90 XX Stradale and XX Spider supercars recently unveiled are a track-prepped spin on the standard SF90. They are the first double-X Ferrari to offer road-capability, making them the most powerful road-going vehicles the manufacturer has produced.  With three electric motors and a tuned version of the twin-turbocharged V8 in the standard SF90, the double-X Ferraris reach a combined 1,016 horsepower. Maranello engineers polished the engine’s inlet and exhaust ports, crafted new pistons and increased the compression ratio for a V8-only output of 786 hp, an increase of 17 versus the standard SF90’s engine.  This power let the SF90XX clock a 0-62mph time of 2.3 seconds — two-tenths quicker than the standard SF90. A new “Extra Boost” feature pushes

New Ferrari Roma Spider: 50 years in the making

Has it been 50 years? In 1973, Ferrari debuted the soft-topped 365 GTB/4 Daytona Spider. Five decades after the last of those convertibles left the Maranello, Italy factory, Ferrari recently announced the Prancing Horse will gain be worn on a soft-top, front-engined grand tourer. The automaker took the veil off the roofless Roma with “Spider” at the end of its name. The Roma Spider will replace the Portofino M as the new entry-level Ferrari. A company spokesperson confirmed the news to Road and Track. The new Roma Spider is complete with a retractable, woven fabric soft-top and a powerful, turbocharged V8. Ferrari reworked several mechanical elements to make the Roma Spider as road-worthy as its coupe counterpart. The soft-top, available

Mansory Tempesta Celeste is heavenly in name only

Somewhere Ferrari’s brand management has to be fuming. The Italian luxury automaker has a long history of taking action against customers who modify its cars in ways they deem problematic to the Prancing Horse’s image. Pop singer Justin Bieber’s bright blue, vinyl-wrapped Ferrari 458 with flared fenders, large wheels, and heavy tint got him blackballed from future purchases. DJ Deadmau5’s full wrap illustrating the Internet meme “Nyan Cat” was worthy of a cease and desist letter. Can German tuner Mansory’s re-envisioned SF90 Spider be far behind those two in drawing the ire of the legendary Italian marque? The recently debuted, one-of-three hypercar named “Tempesta Celeste” takes radical styling to the next level. Its name translates to “heavenly storm” but many

Radical Ferrari LaFerrari successor spied upon

Ferrari’s top-of-the-line hypercars are unveiled once a decade, and the newest addition to the bloodline won’t be hard to miss. Automotive YouTuber “Varryx” uploaded initial footage of a Ferrari test mule wearing full digital camouflage. No amount of camouflage, however, can cover the prototype’s colossal rear wing and other potential styling cues. The public testing comes eight months after Ferrari announced the successor to the decade-old LaFerrari will “arrive soon.” Varryx’s first look is only 40 seconds in duration but provides critical information regarding design and aerodynamics, and the powertrain configuration possibilities. Additional clues can be found in leaked documents published by Motor1 pointing to a LaFerrari successor. The documents state the new vehicle is internally known as the F250

#246, New Ferrari, LA Auto Show, Dumb Car Names

As we do periodically throughout the year, on this week’s episode of The Weekly Driver Podcast co-host Bruce Aldrich and I get caught up on the automotive industry news. There’s always a lot happening, and our topics cover a wide range. First, car names can mean a lot toward the success or failure of an automobile. We found a recent list on a prominent auto site that lists the top-25 worst car names in history. The list comes to mind with the not-too-long-ago naming of the pending new Ferrari sport utility vehicle. It will be called the Purosangue. Ferrari, of course, has long been associated with horses and its “Prancing Pony” logo. The new Ferrari is named after the word

Ferrari Purosangue SUV: When nobody knows your name

The idea of a supercar presented as a sport utility vehicle was preposterous — until a few years ago. Sales were so high, not even niche high-end manufacturers could ignore the consumer shift away from sedans to more versatile people haulers. Welcome Ferrari to the once-off-limits core of prestigious carmakers clamoring for a market share. Joining the Aston Martin DBX, Bentley Bentayga, Lamborghini Urus, Porsche Cayenne and Rolls-Royce Cullinan, the 2023 Ferrari Purosangue is expected to debut in July. It’s a rare double for the Italian carmaker — a new model and its first SUV. Introduced last September, the most controversial vehicle in Ferrari history, delayed for more than two years became of Covid-19, will further add to the ever-expanding

Ferrari launches first Le Mans Hypercar in 50 years

Ferrari has unveiled its long-anticipated Le Mans Hypercar (LMH) endurance race car, named the 499P, following months of teasers and a 50-year absence from top-class endurance racing. The vehicle is set to compete in the 100th running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2023. The 499P has been in design since March of 2021 and is debuting after several prominent automakers, including Porsche, Cadillac and BMW have announced their own prototype racers. Ferrari is unique because it will compete in the LMH class instead of the Le Mans Daytona Hybrid (LMDH) class, a costlier series due to the powertrains used. Hypercar entrants also have far greater control over their vehicles, as noted by Ferdinando Cannizzo, Ferrari‘s GT track

Celebrity cars, big money in Monterey Auto Week

Michael Schumacher, the retired seven-time Formula One world titlist, hasn’t been in public for nearly a decade. He suffered major head injuries in a skiing accident in 2013 and was placed into a medically induced coma. But Schumacher’s unmatched career legacy remains, in keen focus via his son Mick, a current F1 competitor. Among the cars the elder Schumacher drove is a Ferrari F300, Chassis No. 187. It was driven by the German champion in his four victories during his 1998 World Championship season. Equipped with a 3.0-liter V-10 engine, a maximum engine speed of 17,500 rpm and producing 800 horsepower, the supercar will be among several celebrity vehicles offered for auction in August during Monterey Auto Week.
