2013 Ford Flex: Crossover adds power, styling, alternative fuel

The 2013 Ford Flex looks distinctive, but its boxy styling clearly signifies this is mainly a conservative family vehicle. But owners can stare when others try stuffing lots of people and cargo into a less-roomy vehicle. The Flex, which has front- or all-wheel drive, features three seating rows and can handle seven people when all seats are in an upright position. The Flex has a long 117.9-inch wheelbase, which helps the ride, and weighs from 4,471 to 4,839 pounds, which takes away some of its nimbleness. Still, it feels like a typical carlike crossover vehicle. Rivals include the Buick Enclave, GMC Acadia,Toyota Highlander and Honda Pilot. With the third-row seats in their upright position, there’s enough room for, say, a

Honda Civic 2012 gets dubious most disliked car honor

Picking the best cars of the year is rather pedestrian. Plenty of automobiles qualify because competition among manufacturers just keeps getting better. But the worst cars of 2012? That's more difficult. Are there really 10 horrible new cars? CNN.Money.com thinks so. It stops short of calling the selectees to its dubious honors list the worst cars. Rather Alex Taylor III, an at-large senior editor, lumps models from Honda, Nissan, BMW, Chevrolet, Fiat, Jaguar, Infiniti on his 2012 Most Disliked Cars list. For example, here's how the Taylor in part describes the Honda Civic, his pick as the most disliked of the disliked cars on his list: "Seemingly designed for the recession generation, the bland, cheezy, ninth-generation Civic went on sale

Yugo endures as endearing, worst car ever made

The legend of the Yugo, the Yugoslavian-built mini sedan often cited as the worst car in history, lives on. Jonathan Welsh, writing in revolving automotive blog Driver’s Seat in The Wall Street Journal, contributed a recent piece about the Yugo. The author noticed 1987 Yugo on the street and it triggered thoughts of a college friend who owned one of the early versions of the cheap car. Welsh’s bog is critical of the car, yes. But it’s also endearing, an homage to the dubious history of the now infamous car. In one paragraph, Welsh writes: “Its tan interior was sleek and uncluttered, a bit like a minimalist art exhibit. The car gained minor fame for its amazingly low sticker price
