If you own a 2011–2019 Ford Explorer with the 3.5-liter V6 and you have just been quoted somewhere between $1,500 and $3,000 for a water pump, you are not being robbed. You are paying for where Ford put it.
On most cars, the water pump bolts to the outside of the engine, runs off the accessory belt, and swaps out in an hour or two. On this Explorer — and on the other transverse 3.5-liter Fords of the era — the pump lives inside the engine, behind the timing cover, driven by the timing chain. Ford’s own service documentation does not even call it a water pump; the procedure is titled “Coolant Pump,” and reading it explains the bill better than any service advisor can.

Why It Costs So Much: The Pump Is Behind the Timing Chain
The 3.5-liter Ti-VCT V6 drives its coolant pump from the primary timing chain. That means the pump sits under the engine’s front cover, behind the chains, guides, tensioners, and both variable-cam-timing units. Nothing about the part is exotic — it is a pump with eight bolts and two gaskets. Everything about reaching it is.
The factory service manual for the 2013 Explorer lays it out as two full procedures stacked on top of each other. First, the engine front cover has to come off. Then the timing drive has to come apart. Only then do you see the pump.
What the Factory Procedure Actually Requires
Here is the removal of the engine front cover alone, by Ford’s own procedure: the vehicle goes on a hoist. The air-conditioning system is recovered and evacuated. The fuel system is depressurized, the battery disconnected. The cooling system is drained, then the engine oil is drained. The splash shield, air duct, accessory belt tensioner, crankshaft front seal, degas bottle, an A/C line, the fuel supply tube, and both valve covers come off. The generator is repositioned. The engine is supported on a floor jack under the oil pan, and the front engine mount — four nuts and three bolts — is removed so the engine can be raised and lowered to reach the cover bolts. There are 25 of those bolts in three sizes, and the cover is pried off at seven marked pry points.
That is the preliminary step. Now the pump procedure starts: rotate the crankshaft to align the timing marks, remove both valve-train oil tubes, install Ford’s camshaft holding tool (303-1248), remove the primary chain tensioner and arm, remove both VCT oil-control solenoids, remove the primary chain, remove the right-hand VCT assemblies and the secondary chain — their bolts are single-use and must be replaced — and remove both primary chain guides. Then the manual issues a warning that tells you everything about this design: pack the oil pan opening with shop towels, because coolant entering the oil pan can cause engine failure.
Then, finally, the eight pump bolts.
Roughly 25 distinct actions to get the cover off, another 25 to get the pump out, and the whole sequence in reverse to put it back — including a fresh oil filter and an oil change, which Ford builds into the pump installation because coolant and oil share this neighborhood. The torque specs alone tell the story: the pump bolts are tightened in two stages (89 lb-in, then an additional 45 degrees); the new VCT bolts in four (30 lb-ft, back off one full turn, 18 lb-ft, then 180 degrees more). Then 11.7 quarts of Motorcraft Orange coolant — 12.8 with the tow package — and a timing-chain job’s worth of care not to be one tooth off.
Eight to twelve hours of book labor is common for this repair, and now you know why.

How to Catch It Early — and When Not to Panic
Because the pump is internal, the fear is specific: a failed seal can send coolant where it does not belong. The manual’s own instruction to pack the oil pan opening during the job is Ford acknowledging that risk in writing. So knowing the early signs is worth real money.
The weep hole rule most people get wrong. Ford’s manual has a dedicated note on this. The 3.5-liter has a coolant weep hole on the front left of the engine, behind the generator, and the manual states that every coolant pump has some leakage past its seal — that dampness and crusting around the weep hole are acceptable and an expected result of normal operation. What is not acceptable is spray, or enough leakage to puddle. If a shop condemns your pump on the strength of a crusty weep hole alone, ask them to show you active leakage. Ford’s own procedure would.
The signs that actually matter:
- Coolant level dropping in the degas bottle with no visible external leak — the classic internal-pump tell
- A sweet coolant smell from the engine bay, or steam, without a puddle on the ground
- Oil that looks milky or frothy on the dipstick or under the oil cap — stop driving and have it checked
- Overheating or temperature swings, especially after a period of unexplained coolant loss
- Coolant puddling or spray around the front of the engine — the failure the manual says to address
Check the coolant level every few weeks on a high-mileage 3.5-liter Explorer. That five-second habit is the cheapest insurance this engine offers.

What You Are Actually Paying For
Parts for this job are modest: the pump, gaskets, the single-use VCT bolts, a new oil filter and oil, and roughly three gallons of coolant. The bill is labor, and the labor is honest. Some owners on the far side of 100,000 miles choose to replace the pump proactively while the front of the engine is already apart for a timing-chain service — a sensible call that turns a surprise failure into a scheduled one.
Where you can genuinely save is on the second opinion. Independent shops that know this engine typically come in well under dealer quotes for identical work, and the difference is not in the part.
Read the Procedure Before You Approve the Quote
