Interstate 95: A Reputation for Danger

For anyone who has lived on the Easter seaboard for any period of time, it is difficult not to hear about I-95 on a daily basis. Whether news reporters are alluding to accidents that have occurred on I-95 — or just encouraging motorists to avoid traffic on the highway — the constant public chatter about this highway truly stands out. From Maine to Miami, the iconic highway extends for almost 2,000 miles. In Florida, I-95 has developed a particularly prickly reputation. This is at least partly due to the fact that the highway runs through so many big cities in Florida; in addition to serving up a big presence in Miami, I95 also intersects with parts of Fort Lauderdale and Jacksonville.

Are “Snowbirds” or Texting to Blame?

Although I-95 spans a number of states, its accidents seem to turn particularly deadly when they occur in Florida. But why is this? Some like to cast blame upon the constant stream of tourists that descends upon the Sunshine State in winter months. Many argue that these tourists, unfamiliar with the roads, become involved in more accidents due to the distraction of not knowing where they are. Also, it’s worthwhile to point out that distraction itself has ballooned into a big issue as well. It has been reported that the rise in the use of mobile devices — particularly mobile apps and texting — has affected I-95 just as much — if not more — than other highways around the United States. In Florida, it also seems that law enforcement has a particularly difficult time with citing drivers for distracted driving.

Speeding and Racing

When it comes to I-95 in Florida, many surmise that the uptick in danger has to do with the popularity of speeding these days. FDOT (Florida Department of Transportation) has specifically called out speeding as an issue in areas that are just outside of Floridian metropolises — drivers are no longer held back by extreme traffic and may feel comfortable pushing their vehicles to the limit. Unfortunately, the faster they go, the more likely it is that these drivers are going to cause a catastrophic accident.

Just Too Many Cars

The simple fact of the matter is that Interstate 95 is just a lot busier than other highways and roads. It attracts more cars and more trucks, and the possibility of danger increases a bit with each vehicle that enters the highway. Also, the extraordinary amount of traffic on I-95 affects the road, necessitating repairs and construction zones. For drivers who are already stressed by other aspects of the highway, this can put them over the edge.

Vigilance Is Key

With almost 400,000 car accidents resulting in 3,538 deaths reported in Florida in 2022, I-95 is not the only dangerous road in the state. For those who are taking the I-95 in Florida, it’s best to adhere to the rules of the road as closely as possible. By wearing a seatbelt, driving sober, not texting, not speeding, and preparing their directions ahead of time, motorists put themselves in the best position to stay safe on this highway.
