Battery & Propulsion Reliability

Battery Electric (BEV)

Battery & propulsion complaint analysis for the 2026 Subaru Solterra

3 battery-related complaints 3.0 per year 1 battery-related recall

Too few field reports to rate this generation against peers yet. Most recently launched models accumulate complaints over the first 2-3 years.

What kind of battery complaint?

Among the 3 battery-related complaints, here's the type mix. These percentages describe what the complaints are about — not how reliable the vehicle is overall.

12V Auxiliary Battery 2 (67%)

Low-voltage battery deaths, common on EVs and hybrids that use a 12V for accessories.

Electric Propulsion 1 (33%)

Loss of power, drive unit, inverter, traction motor, DC-DC converter.

Battery & propulsion recalls (1)
26V393000 ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:PROPULSION SYSTEM

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2026 Toyota BZ, Lexus RZ, and Subaru Solterra battery electric vehicles. The electronic control unit (ECU) that controls the high voltage battery may experience a fault, resulting in a loss of drive power.

Consequence: An unexpected loss of drive power increases the risk of a crash.

  • [2026] Brand new Subaru Solterra died after only a month on the road Root cause is parasitic power drain from 12V battery which completely ran dry Car has been in shop for a week without any possible root cause and repair Problem is prevalent on this particular model as reported by owners of 2023 till 2026 and also from towing companies I'm afraid if not fixed at the root, car will die again after a sh

  • [2026] On XXX at approximately 1:20 PM, my 2026 Subaru Solterra (approx. 4,761 miles) experienced a sudden loss of motive power while I was driving on a 4 lane trunk highway at approximately 40mph. The vehicle's drive system shut down without warning and the instrument cluster displayed "EV system malfunction – Visit Your Dealer." The vehicle would not deliver any propulsion. I was able to coast to a

Source: classified from NHTSA complaint and recall data. "Battery-related" includes high-voltage propulsion battery, charging system, hybrid drivetrain, electric propulsion, regenerative braking, 12V auxiliary battery, and thermal-event complaints. Other complaints (suspension, steering, brakes, infotainment) appear in the engine and vehicle-level sections. Rates are absolute counts, not normalized per-VIN — high-volume models naturally produce more raw complaints than low-volume ones. Self-reported death and injury counts are capped per complaint to limit form abuse.

Known issues

High
Battery ECU software defect (NHTSA 26V393000, filed June 2026). Two integrated circuits in the Denso-supplied battery ECU can overwrite the same memory address, failing an operational check. Repeated failures post an “EV System Malfunction” warning, illuminate multiple malfunction indicator lamps and shut down the electric drive system, with power steering and power-assisted braking still operating. 20,991 vehicles: 11,495 Toyota bZ, 4,757 Subaru Solterra, 4,739 Lexus RZ. Remedy is a free dealer software update; owner letters mailed 2026-08-17.
Medium
NHTSA 26V-570 (September 2026) covers 8,521 2026 Toyota C-HR electric vehicles. A software error may let the drive battery overcharge under certain driving conditions, which can shut down the electric drive system and cause a loss of drive power. Dealers update the BEV ECU software free of charge. The Solterra is not named.
Low
Six vehicles share this pack across two brands: Subaru Solterra, Trailseeker and Uncharted, and Toyota bZ, bZ Woodland and C-HR. The base Toyota bZ XLE with front-wheel drive is the exception, with a separate 57.7 kWh pack. Only the Solterra has a reliability page here so far.
Low
Charging tops out at 150 kW. Subaru quotes 10 to 80 percent in 28 minutes and Toyota about 30 minutes under ideal conditions, through a NACS port with an 11 kW on-board charger and battery preconditioning on every model.
Low
All-wheel drive costs range on the same pack. EPA rates the Subaru Uncharted at 308 miles with front-wheel drive and 287 with all-wheel drive, or 273 on 20-inch wheels. The Solterra is rated at 288 miles and the Trailseeker at 281, both all-wheel drive only.
Low
This pack replaces the 71.4 and 72.8 kWh packs in the 2023-2025 bZ4X and Solterra. Recalls filed against the earlier packs do not carry over.

How this pack ages (industry context)

Industry fleet aggregates: 2.3% average annual capacity loss across 22,700 EVs / 21 models (Geotab, 2026), and 95% range retention at 5 years on average across 30,000+ vehicles (Recurrent, 2026).

OEM warranty floor on this pack: 8 yr / 100k mi.

Public per-pack degradation curves are not available for most models. Individual results vary materially with climate, charging behavior, and DC fast-charge frequency.
