Recall rankings by year

How these figures work

Each recall is one NHTSA vehicle recall campaign, counted in the year NHTSA received the manufacturer's report. A brand's rate divides its recalls by the vehicles it built over the ten model years ending with that year, from the production figures manufacturers report to NHTSA. Campaigns that a truck maker, upfitter or mobility-van converter files under a car brand's name are left out of that brand's count. Recall rates use every vehicle a brand built, while reliability scores use production for the models they rate. A full year's figures lock once NHTSA publishes every ranked manufacturer's fourth-quarter production report, or on September 30 of the following year with the latest report on file.

Questions about car recalls by manufacturer

Which car company has the most recalls?

Ford Motor Co. has filed the most vehicle recalls in 2026: 80 through November 7. In 2025, the latest year with final figures, Ford Motor Co. filed the most, 146. A campaign that names several of a company's brands counts once for that company.

Does Ford have the most recalls?

Ford Motor Co. has filed 80 recalls in 2026 through November 7, the most of any parent company; Stellantis is next with 35. In 2025, the latest year with final figures, Ford Motor Co. led every parent company with 146 recalls. Per vehicle built, the Ford brand was tied with Cadillac for the 7th-highest rate of 29 ranked brands in 2025, 6.58 recalls per million vehicles.

Which car brand has the fewest recalls per vehicle?

In 2025, Buick had the fewest recalls per vehicle: 0.53 per million vehicles built for model years 2016 to 2025, from 1 recall. Toyota (0.76) and Subaru (0.76) had the next-lowest rates. The ranking covers brands with at least 500,000 vehicles built in that window.

Which car brand has the most recalls per vehicle?

In 2025, Lincoln had the most recalls per vehicle: 49.34 per million vehicles built for model years 2016 to 2025, from 51 recalls. Porsche (11.98) and Land Rover (9.66) had the next-highest rates.

How many car recalls were filed in 2026?

NHTSA received 698 recalls for vehicles in 2026 through November 7, counting every make, including trucks, buses, RVs and trailers. Ford Motor Co. filed 80 of them, the most of any car company.

How many car recalls were filed in 2025?

NHTSA received 891 recalls for vehicles in 2025, counting every make, including trucks, buses, RVs and trailers. Ford Motor Co. filed 146 of them, the most of any car company.

Which car models had the most recalls in 2025?

The Ford Bronco and Ford F-150 were each named in 21 recalls in 2025. Next were the Ford Explorer and Lincoln Navigator, with 19 each. A model counts once per recall campaign that names it.

What does a recall mean for my car?

A recall means the manufacturer or NHTSA found a safety defect, or a failure to meet a federal safety standard, in a group of vehicles. The manufacturer has to fix it at no charge, and a dealer does the work. To check one car, enter its 17-character VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. A recall count tracks how often a maker filed campaigns; each campaign can cover a handful of vehicles or several million.

How are these recall figures counted?

Each recall is one NHTSA vehicle recall campaign, dated by the day NHTSA received the manufacturer's report. Equipment, tire and child-seat recalls are left out. A campaign naming several brands counts once for each brand and once for the parent company. RV, bus, trailer and body-builder makes are not listed. Campaigns that a truck maker, upfitter or mobility-van converter files under a car brand's name are left out of that brand's count.

Why do recall rates differ from raw recall counts?

A brand that builds millions of vehicles a year sells more models with more parts, so it tends to file more recalls. The rate divides a brand's recalls by the vehicles it built over the ten model years ending with the recall year, a stand-in for its vehicles on the road. In 2025, Ford filed 134 recalls at 6.58 per million vehicles built, and Lincoln filed 51 at 49.34.
