The ID. Tiguan, an electric SUV Volkswagen revealed on October 9, will replace the Volkswagen ID.4 in North America. “The ID. Tiguan is planned to succeed the ID.4 in the North American market,” Volkswagen of America said, adding that it will share timing, pricing and other details after the European launch in early 2027.
Inside, the temperature is set with a button again: VW’s press kit describes a bar of climate keys on the center console where you “click the temperature button upwards for warmer air; press the button downwards for cooler air,” and the steering wheel now carries “physical buttons instead of touch controls.”
Key Takeaways
- Volkswagen of America says the ID. Tiguan is “planned to succeed the ID.4” in North America. It has announced no U.S. timing, price or model year.
- The European launch comes in early 2027, with German pre-sales from €42,695 opening October 13, 2026.
- Climate and audio move to physical controls: a button bar for temperature, a rotary push-button for volume and a steering wheel with buttons in place of touch surfaces.
- Two batteries: a 58 kWh LFP pack with up to 450 km (about 280 miles) of forecast WLTP range, and a 77 kWh NMC pack with up to 600 km (about 373 miles).
- U.S. ID.4 assembly in Chattanooga ended in mid-April 2026, and VW sold 989 ID.4s in the third quarter, down 92.1% from 12,470.
- European ID. Tiguans are built in Emden, Germany. Volkswagen has not said where North American cars will come from.
- Recall 26V630 covers 22,524 ID.4s from the 2023 to 2026 model years for a battery fire risk, and the final remedy is still in development.
Volkswagen of America Has Not Set U.S. Timing or Price
Volkswagen of America “has not announced North American timing for the vehicle,” and it says the specifications Volkswagen released on October 9 refer to the European car. On September 28, when Volkswagen announced the name, the American arm said the ID. Tiguan “is confirmed to come to the North American market at a later date.”
On April 9, Volkswagen Group of America said it would stop building the ID.4 in Chattanooga, Tennessee, in mid-April 2026 and turn the plant toward the second-generation Atlas.
Model-year 2026 ID.4s stay on sale from inventory, which VW said it expects “will support customer demand into 2027.”
Volkswagen of America sold 989 ID.4s from July through September, its third-quarter report shows, against 12,470 a year earlier. The gasoline Tiguan went the other way, up 27.4% to 28,091, and it is the name Volkswagen chose to hang on the electric car.
Volkswagen AG builds the European ID. Tiguan at its Emden plant and the combustion Tiguan in Wolfsburg.
Volkswagen has not said whether North American cars will be imported from Germany or assembled here.
Buttons, a Volume Knob and a Golf IV Gauge Mode
“Important functions can therefore be accessed again using physical buttons,” the press kit says, in the chapter that also carries the line “We listened and then we implemented.” It adds that the details were designed “in exactly the way that customers in Europe want.”
Volume and track changes go through a rotary push-button controller in the console, ahead of which sit two Qi2 phone chargers with magnetic rings. The driver’s door panel for the four power windows has been redesigned. VW lists only two carryover controls, the gear selector “used in all new Volkswagen vehicles” and the stalk for the wipers and turn signals, and says “everything else is new.”
A 10-inch digital instrument cluster and a 15-inch center display are joined by an optional 12-inch passenger screen, which VW calls the first in a European Volkswagen and which uses a privacy mode the driver cannot see.
Pressing a “View” button on the wheel turns the cluster into the blue-and-red gauges of a Golf IV, with the right-hand dial showing power flow instead of engine speed. The center screen can show a virtual garage of six VW models, among them the Golf I, the Race Touareg and the Beetle.
Volkswagen dropped genuine chrome from the decorative and trim elements and “uses chrome replacement paints” instead.
Two Batteries and Up to 600 km of WLTP Range
The base ID. Tiguan uses a 58 kWh lithium iron phosphate pack. The upgrade is a 77 kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt battery with rear-wheel drive or 4MOTION all-wheel drive, all on the MEB+ platform.

The 58 kWh pack charges from 10 to 80% in about 26 minutes on a 105 kW peak, three minutes quicker than the 77 kWh battery at 165 kW.
The ID. Tiguan is 4,618 mm (181.8 in.) long on a 2,765-mm (108.9-in.) wheelbase. Cargo space runs up to 534 liters, or 1,577 liters loaded to the roof, plus a 32-liter front trunk VW suggests for the charging cable. The drag coefficient is 0.26.
The European ID. Tiguan Next to the U.S. ID.4
The ID. Tiguan is 34 mm longer and 23 mm lower than a U.S. ID.4 Pro on effectively the same wheelbase, and both carry 77 kWh of usable battery. The 210 kW rear-drive ID. Tiguan converts to 282 hp, the output Volkswagen of America quotes for the rear-drive ID.4 Pro.

| Starting price | €42,695 (Germany) | $45,095 plus $1,475 destination |
The all-wheel-drive ID. Tiguan is rated 40 hp below the U.S. ID.4 AWD.
The ID.4 Is Under a Battery Fire Recall
Volkswagen filed recall 26V630 on September 30 for 22,524 ID.4s from the 2023 to 2026 model years, built from January 1, 2023 to February 1, 2025. Its Part 573 report gives the root cause as unknown and says certain charging profiles combined with a state of charge over 80% may trigger thermal propagation in the high-voltage battery, which can lead to a fire.
The cells come from SK Battery America in Commerce, Georgia.
The final remedy is still under development. Until then, owners are told not to charge above 80%, and VW plans to mail interim letters by November 27. Our ID.4 battery recall page tracks the filing, and the ID.4 reliability page breaks down owner complaints by model year.
Volkswagen says more than 950,000 ID.4 and ID.5 models have been built since 2021, and the ID. Tiguan replaces both. The ID.5, a fastback version, was never offered in the U.S.
“The ID. Tiguan brings these two success stories together,” said Thomas Schäfer, CEO of the Volkswagen brand, referring to the Tiguan and the ID.4 and ID.5.
U.S. Timing and Pricing Come After the European Launch
The ID. Tiguan launches in Europe in early 2027 from €42,695 in Germany, with a 77 kWh battery that matches the U.S. ID.4’s, a footprint within 34 mm of it, and physical buttons for climate and audio. Volkswagen of America calls it the planned ID.4 successor but has given no date, price or plant, while the ID.4 it replaces sold 989 units in the third quarter from inventory left over after Chattanooga stopped building it in April.
Frequently Asked Questions
