Motorcyclists already face a higher risk of injury or death than other motorists. Riders encounter dangers on busy streets, rural roads and in small towns. Even the small city of Spokane, Washington saw 115 motorcycle accidents resulting in 6 deaths in 2024. Unfortunately, this risk increases when road hazards are involved. Safe riding practices can decrease your risk of injury while on the road, especially when conditions are less than ideal. Here are some ways to ride safely during hazardous road and weather situations.

Obey the Speed Limit

Conditions can frequently change on the road, especially when you least expect them. A sudden storm or cloud of fog can quickly reduce your visibility and limit your traction. Since motorcycles offer limited protection, higher speeds lead to greater injury risks in a collision. Obeying speed limits provides more space and time to stop.

Stay Alert in Construction Zones

Construction zones are full of unexpected obstacles, like loose gravel, workers and sudden shifts in traffic patterns. The lanes are often narrower, too, and the road surface may be uneven, creating challenging driving conditions. To reduce collision risks and injuries, stay alert and keep a safe amount of distance from the vehicle ahead.

Always Wear Your Protective Gear

According to research, 15% of all traffic fatalities in 2023 involved motorcyclists. Wearing protective gear like helmets, jackets and boots can prevent serious injuries and enhance visibility while protecting against bad weather and road debris.

Practice Defensive Riding Techniques

Monitor Weather Conditions Ahead of Time

Long journeys require plenty of preparation. Be sure to check all weather conditions along your route and not just those at your destination. By looking at all anticipated weather conditions ahead of your trip, you can determine the best time for departure and perhaps even seek an alternate route so you can avoid the worst weather.

If conditions grow too bad, you get too cold or visibility becomes difficult, it’s best to pull over and wait for things to clear up a bit. Remember, it’s much better to reach your destination late than not reach it at all.
