NHTSA Safety Ratings About NHTSA ratings
Reliability Overview
The 2013-2020 Fusion carries 21,798 NHTSA complaints across eight model years, 32 NHTSA recalls, 374 fires, and 9 deaths attributed to defects. The recall count is the highest of any sedan in our database for the era, and the reliability story is not one component but a long list of them.
The most repeated recall pattern is the shifter cable bushing. Ford issued a 2018 recall (NHTSA 18V471000) covering the cable bushing that connects the transmission shifter to the transmission itself, expanded it in 2019 (19V362000) to cover 2013-2016 cars with the 2.5-liter engine, and again in 2022 (22V413000) to sweep in additional Fusion, Escape, C-Max, Edge, and Transit Connect models from 2013 onward. The failure mode is straightforward: the bushing degrades over time, the cable can disconnect, and the indicated gear can mismatch the actual gear engaged. A driver thinking the car is in Park may walk away from a vehicle still in Drive, with predictable rollaway consequences.
Steering produced four separate recalls in this generation. Powertrain recalls totaled six (including the bushing series, a 2014 recall for the 1.6L EcoBoost manual transmission, and a 2017 torque converter weld recall on 2017 cars with 2.0L gas engines and six-speed automatics). The remaining 22 recalls scatter across door latches (5), seat belts (3), engine and cooling (2), seats (2), fuel system (2), service brakes (2), and singletons in air bags, lighting, electrical, and equipment. The fire count of 374 is particularly notable; that is more fires than the contemporary 13th-gen F-150 (286 fires across 6 model years) despite the Fusion selling in lower volumes.
The engine lineup covered standard gas, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid options. Gas variants ran a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four (base), a 1.6-liter EcoBoost (2013-2014), a 1.5-liter EcoBoost (2014 onward), a 2.0-liter EcoBoost (mid-trim), and a 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 in the Fusion Sport from 2017 to 2020. Hybrid and Energi PHEV variants used a 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle four paired with electric drive. The Energi added a lithium-ion battery pack for approximately 21 miles of electric range.
The earlier 1st-gen Fusion (2006-2012) carried 20,850 complaints across seven model years, a comparable volume but with different recall and complaint patterns. The Fusion nameplate was discontinued in North America after 2020 as Ford exited most of the sedan market. Parts and dealer support for this generation will thin out over the next decade.
Used buyers shopping a 2013-2020 Fusion should treat the recall list as a checklist rather than reference material. Many of the 32 recalls have multi-year expansions and continue to be issued today. A clean Carfax does not guarantee recall completion. Run the VIN through NHTSA’s recall lookup and require the seller to complete any open campaigns before signing. The 2.5L NA engine has the lowest recall exposure of the gas options; the 1.6L EcoBoost the highest.

Battery & propulsion complaint analysis for the 2013-2020 Ford Fusion
That's about 3.9x the typical rate for hybrids in this dataset (median 7.0 per year). Above peer average — but high-volume models naturally produce more raw complaints, so check the issue mix below before drawing conclusions.
What kind of battery complaint?
Among the 242 battery-related complaints, here's the type mix. These percentages describe what the complaints are about — not how reliable the vehicle is overall.
Loss of power, drive unit, inverter, traction motor, DC-DC converter.
Propulsion battery defects, capacity loss, BMS faults, replacement claims.
Charge port, cable, mobile connector, or session failures.
Low-voltage battery deaths, common on EVs and hybrids that use a 12V for accessories.
Hybrid system warnings, eCVT, motor-generator, hybrid transaxle.
Battery fires, smoke, thermal runaway. Includes any complaint with fire reported.
Battery & propulsion recalls (1)
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2019-2020 Fusion PHEV vehicles. The battery energy control module (BECM) may become damaged due to excessive voltage and current flow.
Consequence: A damaged BECM can result in a loss of drive power or fire, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.

Source: classified from NHTSA complaint and recall data. "Battery-related" includes high-voltage propulsion battery, charging system, hybrid drivetrain, electric propulsion, regenerative braking, 12V auxiliary battery, and thermal-event complaints. Other complaints (suspension, steering, brakes, infotainment) appear in the engine and vehicle-level sections. Rates are absolute counts, not normalized per-VIN — high-volume models naturally produce more raw complaints than low-volume ones. Self-reported death and injury counts are capped per complaint to limit form abuse.
Vehicle-Level Issues
These issues affect the Ford Fusion regardless of engine variant.
Buyer's Guide
The 2013-2020 Fusion is defined by its 32-recall history, more than any sedan in our database for the era. Used buyers should treat the recall list as the controlling factor rather than mileage or trim. The 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder has the lowest recall exposure of the gas options. The 1.6-liter EcoBoost, the 2.0-liter EcoBoost, and the hybrid variants each carry their own recall and complaint patterns that warrant individual VIN verification.
Inspection priorities before buying any 2013-2020 Fusion cluster around four areas. Recall verification: the multi-year shifter cable bushing recall (NHTSA 18V471000, 19V362000, 22V413000) covers 2013-onward Fusions with the 2.5L engine and has been progressively expanded, so confirm it is closed via the VIN lookup. Transmission: on 2017 cars with the 2.0L gas engine and six-speed automatic, verify the torque converter weld recall (17V427000) is complete. Test the shifter and verify Park engages and holds on a slight incline. Steering: four separate steering recalls affect this generation; confirm all are closed and test for any pull or unusual feedback. Engine and cooling: ask for cooling system service records and watch the temperature gauge during the test drive. The generation’s 374 fire reports across eight model years is high relative to volume comparables.
This generation is used-market territory, with the youngest examples four years old and the nameplate discontinued in North America. The Fusion Sport (2.7L EcoBoost V6) and the Fusion Energi PHEV have the thinnest parts supply chains and warrant additional caution. Run the VIN through NHTSA’s recall lookup before signing and budget for ongoing recall remediation; this generation has produced new recalls into 2022 and beyond.

In the affected vehicles, the key may be able to be removed even while the transmission is not in Park. Thus, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 114, "Theft Protection and Rollaway Prevention."
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2013-2014 Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ vehicles manufactured August 15, 2012, through September 10, 2013, 2013-2014 Ford Escape vehicles manufactured June 5, 2012, through August 12, 2013, and 2013-2014 Ford C-Max vehicles manufactured from July 23, 2012, through May 28, 2013. The affected vehicles may not have had the low beam headlamp projector coating properly cured during its manufacturing process.
This is an update to a recently announced recall. Ford is recalling certain model year 2013 Escape vehicles manufactured from October 5, 2011, through November 26, 2012, equipped with 1.6L engines, as well as certain model year 2013 Fusion vehicles manufactured from February 3, 2012, through November 29, 2012, equipped with 1.6L engines. Coolant system leaks may cause the engines to overheat and leak flammable engine fluids.
