NHTSA Safety Ratings About NHTSA ratings
Reliability Overview
The 14th-gen Ford F-150 (2021-2025) logged 2,683 NHTSA complaints across five model years, with 91 crashes, 25 fires, 77 injuries, 1 death, and 36 recall campaigns. The complaint pattern is less about a single catastrophic failure mode and more about software, the 10-speed transmission, and the launch-year growing pains of a heavily redesigned electrical architecture. The pipeline fix on 2026-05-20 separated the Lightning EV from the gas lineup, so the numbers below describe the internal-combustion F-150 only.
Transmission and electrical issues lead the volume. Transmission accounts for 801 complaints, electrical for 576, and the two together represent 51% of the total. The 10R80 10-speed automatic carried over from the prior generation but with revised calibration. A 2022 recall on 2021 trucks for a false low-transmission-fluid-pressure diagnostic that could shift the truck unexpectedly into neutral is the most consequential single transmission campaign, and a separate 2023 recall covered automatic transmissions with a loose bolt that could fall into the gear train. Electrical complaints split between body-control-module software faults, the OTA update infrastructure introduced for this generation, and recurring camera and exterior-lighting issues that Ford has re-recalled multiple times when the original fix did not hold.
The 36 recall total is heavy but representative of how Ford has handled this generation. Many are OTA software fixes that ship through the truck's cellular connection rather than requiring a dealer visit, which compresses the time-to-remedy but does not reduce the campaign count. Notable mechanical recalls include the 2021-2022 aluminum-driveshaft heat-shield-contact campaign, the 2.7L/3.0L Nano EcoBoost intake-valve recall, the 2021 electronic brake booster fluid leak (rare but safety-critical), and the 2022 Raptor 37-inch-tire lug-nut tightening campaign. Safety systems issues at 245 complaints and brakes at 186 round out the top five categories and overlap heavily with those recall campaigns.
With the lineup properly split, per-engine fire rates become meaningful for the first time. The 3.5L EcoBoost family carries the highest volume at 1,539 combined complaints, 13 fires, 45 crashes, and the generation's single death, a 0.84% fire-per-complaint rate concentrated in the higher-output variant that pipeline coding flags as avoid. The 5.0L Coyote V8 runs 427 complaints with 5 fires, a 1.17% fire rate that is the highest in the lineup despite the engine's reputation for mechanical simplicity, and warrants extra scrutiny on used examples. The 2.7L EcoBoost (357 complaints, 2 fires, 0.56%) is the cleanest fire profile of the high-volume engines but inherits the intake-valve recall it shares with the 3.0L Nano. The 3.3L naturally aspirated V6 (40 complaints, 2 fires) served as the base engine through 2022 and is no longer in the lineup.
For a buyer cross-shopping new pickups against the Silverado 1500 and Ram 1500, this generation's reliability picture is mostly about tolerance for software-recall friction. Post-2024 trucks have benefited from factory remedies on many of the launch-year campaigns. A 2024-2025 truck with closed recalls and remaining factory warranty is a materially safer pick than a 2021 with the original electrical and transmission baselines.

Hybrid (HEV)
Battery & propulsion complaint analysis for the 2021-2025 Ford F-150
That's about 4.0x the typical rate for hybrids in this dataset (median 7.5 per year). Above peer average โ but high-volume models naturally produce more raw complaints, so check the issue mix below before drawing conclusions.
What kind of battery complaint?
Among the 172 battery-related complaints, here's the type mix. These percentages describe what the complaints are about โ not how reliable the vehicle is overall.
Loss of power, drive unit, inverter, traction motor, DC-DC converter.
Propulsion battery defects, capacity loss, BMS faults, replacement claims.
Hybrid system warnings, eCVT, motor-generator, hybrid transaxle.
Low-voltage battery deaths, common on EVs and hybrids that use a 12V for accessories.
Regen brake feel, one-pedal driving, B-mode complaints.
Battery fires, smoke, thermal runaway. Includes any complaint with fire reported.

Buyer's Guide
Engine choice on a 14th-gen F-150 hinges more on intended use than on reliability deltas, but the corrected per-engine data sharpens the picture. The 2.7L EcoBoost runs the lowest fire-per-complaint rate at 0.56% with no recorded deaths, which makes it a reasonable pick for buyers who do not need full towing capacity. The 5.0L Coyote V8 is mechanically the simplest powerplant in the lineup, but its 1.17% fire rate is the highest among high-volume engines. The 3.5L EcoBoost family covers the bulk of XLT, Lariat, and higher trims and includes the generation's only recorded death, so a buyer should verify whether a candidate truck runs the standard 3.5L or the higher-output variant before committing.
Inspection priorities before buying any 14th-gen F-150: Recall status: the 36 campaigns include OTA fixes that may have applied automatically and dealer-installed parts that may not have. Run the VIN through recalls.nhtsa.dot.gov and confirm everything is closed. Pay particular attention to the 2022 transmission false-DTC neutral-shift campaign, the 2021 brake booster fluid leak, and the aluminum-driveshaft heat-shield campaign. 10R80 transmission: drive the truck through all gears and watch for harsh 1-2 or 2-3 shifts and any unexpected neutral events. The 801 transmission complaints concentrate here. Electrical and software: check that the 360-degree camera, parking lights, and electric parking brake all operate as expected; this generation has seen recurring re-recalls in those areas. EcoBoost intake (2.7L and 3.0L Nano): if the truck has a smaller EcoBoost, verify the intake-valve campaign is closed.
Used pricing on early-14th-gen F-150 trucks has softened. A 2024-2025 truck with factory warranty remaining and clean recall status carries less risk than a 2021-2022 truck at a comparable price, and the spread between the two has narrowed enough that the newer truck is the better risk-adjusted buy.
