2026 Toyota, Subaru and Lexus Recall: Loss of Drive Power

Two integrated circuits inside the battery computer write to the same block of memory. If one overwrites what the other has just written, the memory fails its own operational check. Enough failed checks in a row and the car shuts its drive system down.

Toyota filed campaign 26V393000 on June 18, 2026, covering 20,991 battery electric vehicles across three badges: the Toyota bZ, the Lexus RZ and the Subaru Solterra. Owner letters went out on August 17, 2026.

Every affected car carries the defective software. Toyota lists the estimated percentage with the defect at 100 percent.

The Issue

These vehicles use a battery ECU to manage the high-voltage pack that feeds the drivetrain. Toyota's Part 573 report describes a unit containing two integrated circuits "where one could immediately overwrite data in the same memory address location that the other had just written to."

When that happens the memory fails an operational check. A single failure is recoverable. Multiple failed attempts are not, and the car responds by posting an "EV System Malfunction" message, illuminating malfunction indicator lamps for several systems at once, and shutting down the electric drive system.

The important qualifier is in the same paragraph: power steering and power-assisted braking continue to operate. The car does not lose the ability to steer or stop. It loses the ability to accelerate, and Toyota notes this can happen at higher speeds, which is where a stalled vehicle becomes a hazard to traffic behind it.

The ECU comes from Denso Corporation of Kariya, Japan, listed on the filing as "Computer ASSY, Battery." Denso also supplied the parking-assist ECU behind Toyota's 2025 rearview camera recall and the HVAC control ECU behind its 2025 defroster recall, three separate campaigns on three separate modules from the same supplier.

Only vehicles built with a battery ECU running the specific supplier software are in scope. Toyota states that other Toyota and Lexus vehicles sold in the United States either have no battery ECU or run different software on theirs, which is why a recall on a shared platform does not sweep in the rest of the electrified lineup.

This campaign lands on the refreshed cars, the ones that moved to the 74.7-kWh pack and the NACS port for 2026. It does not touch the earlier 71.4-kWh bZ4X and Solterra.

Reported Incidents

Toyota's filing reports no crashes, injuries or fatalities connected to the defect.

Whether a given car actually shuts down depends on conditions Toyota describes elsewhere in the report rather than on the software alone, so a 100 percent defect rate does not mean 20,991 vehicles will stall. It means every one of them is running the code that can produce the fault.

What Owners Should Do

Owner letters were mailed August 17, 2026, so most affected owners have already been notified. The repair is a battery ECU software update performed by a dealer at no cost.

Toyota's recall numbers are 26LA07 and 26TA11. Subaru's number is WRG26. Toyota customer service is 1-800-331-4331.

There is no do-not-drive order and no park-outside advisory attached to this campaign.

Symptoms to Watch For Before the Drive System Shuts Down

This defect announces itself on the dashboard, which makes it easier to catch than most software faults.

An "EV System Malfunction" message. This is the specific warning Toyota names in the filing. On an affected car it is the direct signature of the fault.

Several malfunction indicator lamps at once. The report describes "multiple malfunction indicator lamps for different systems" illuminating together. A cluster of unrelated warnings appearing simultaneously is the tell.

Loss of acceleration with steering and brakes intact. If the car stops making power but still steers and stops normally, that pattern matches this defect rather than a brake or steering failure.

A shutdown that follows a warning rather than preceding it. The memory has to fail its check repeatedly before the drive system goes down, so the warnings come first.

How Long Will the Recall Repair Take?

A software flash on a single ECU is a short appointment, typically under an hour of bay time. There are no parts to order and no supply constraint, which is why Toyota moved from filing in June to owner letters in August without an interim notice.

Expect to leave the car for a morning rather than a day, and expect scheduling rather than labor to be the limiting factor.

Bottom Line

A drive system that can shut off at speed is serious, and the mitigating detail matters just as much: steering and braking stay live, and the car warns before it quits. That combination turns a potential stranding into a manageable one.
