- Defect
- Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2025-2026 Ram 1500 vehicles. A radio software error may cause the rearview camera image not to display. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rear Visibility."
- Consequence
- A rearview image that does not display reduces the driver's view behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy
- The radio software will be updated over-the-air (OTA) or by a dealer, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed September 24, 2026. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is 83D. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall will be searchable on NHTSA.gov on September 9, 2026.
Stellantis put an unusual number in one box of its Part 573 filing. Under estimated percentage of the recalled population that carries the defect, the company entered 100%. All 239,131 Ram 1500 pickups covered by NHTSA campaign 26V560 have the software error.
The campaign, filed September 1, 2026, covers 2025 and 2026 model year trucks built between October 6, 2023 and February 23, 2026. Stellantis carries it internally as recall 83D. The fix is a radio software update that can be delivered over the air.
Under the heading asking what warning a driver might get, the filing says: None.
The Issue
Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 111 governs rear visibility, and the clause at issue is S6.2.6. It requires that the rear visibility system default to the rearview image being visible, at the correct field of view and image size, at the beginning of every backing event. The standard is explicit that this has to happen regardless of any modification to the field of view the driver previously selected.
That last phrase is the whole recall. These trucks let the driver change what the camera shows, and the radio software fails to return the display to the compliant default when the driver next shifts into reverse. The camera works. The display logic does not reset.
Stellantis describes the result plainly: suspect vehicles may not display the rearview image during a backing event. The radio comes from Harman Becker Automotive Systems of Novi, Michigan.
Trucks outside the recall were either built after February 23, 2026, or came with a different radio or camera.

Owners of a 2026 Ram 1500 should check for a second campaign while they are in the NHTSA lookup. Stellantis filed 26V531 on August 13, 2026, a separate FMVSS 111 rearview camera recall covering 844,027 vehicles across sixteen nameplates, and the 2026 Ram 1500 appears in that population as well. The two campaigns have different suspect periods and different remedies, so a truck can require both.
Chronology and Investigation
Stellantis opened the file itself. On March 17, 2026, its Technical Safety and Regulatory Compliance group started an investigation into rearview cameras not displaying on 2025 and 2026 Ram 1500 trucks.
March through June went to reviewing warranty data, field records and customer assistance records to understand what owners were actually experiencing. July and August moved to production and engineering change records, which is how the company fixed the February 23, 2026 end of the suspect period.
On August 5, 2026, the compliance group concluded the condition existed and that it likely put the trucks out of compliance with FMVSS 111. The Vehicle Regulations Committee made the formal noncompliance determination on August 26, and the Part 573 report reached NHTSA on September 1.
No NHTSA investigation preceded any of this, and the filing lists no related campaign.
Reported Incidents
Stellantis reports no incident data in this filing. The Part 573 gives no warranty claim count, no customer assistance figure, no field reports, and no statement about accidents or injuries.
Those fields being blank is not the same as their being zero. Stellantis reviewed warranty and field records for three months in the course of this investigation, so the data exists. It simply did not go into the public report, and nothing about the count should be inferred from the omission.
What the filing does establish is that this is a compliance failure rather than a wear-out condition. At a 100% defect rate, every affected truck has behaved this way since it left the plant.
Remedy and Notification
The remedy is updated radio software, delivered over the air or installed by a dealer, at no charge. Owners who keep their truck connected should receive it without booking anything.
Stellantis planned to notify dealers on September 9, 2026, which is also when VINs become searchable on the NHTSA lookup. Owner letters mail between September 24 and October 2.
This campaign has no interim letter phase, which separates it from most recalls filed the same week. The remedy exists now, so the first letter an owner receives is the one that tells them how to get the fix. Stellantis has issued no do-not-drive or park-outside advisory. Customer service is 800-853-1403, and the recall number to reference is 83D.
Symptoms to Watch For
Stellantis records no warning for this condition, and in a software default failure that entry is literal. The screen behaves normally right up until the moment it does not show what it should.
A reverse view that is not the standard view. Shifting into reverse and getting a zoomed, cropped, split or trailer-oriented view instead of the full rear image is the condition itself. FMVSS 111 requires the standard view every time.
A camera view that persists from the last backing event. If the display comes back the way it was left rather than resetting, the software is not defaulting the way the standard requires.
No image at all on shifting to reverse. A black screen, a frozen last frame, or the radio staying on its previous screen.
A delay before the image appears. An image that arrives after the truck is already moving is worth reporting even though the filing does not name it.
None of these depend on mileage or age. A truck that has never done it may still be in the population, which is what a 100% defect rate means.
How Long Will the Recall Repair Take?
An over-the-air radio update installs in the background and typically completes in minutes once the truck is parked, connected and has enough battery to hold the process. Owners who take the OTA path spend no shop time at all.
A dealer flash is an appointment measured in under an hour of actual work, though the service lane wait usually exceeds the procedure. Stellantis has published no labor time for recall 83D.
Owners of a 2026 truck that also falls under 26V531 should ask the dealer to check both campaigns in one visit rather than treating them as separate trips.
Bottom Line
A backup camera that shows the wrong view is a hazard on a full-size pickup more than on most vehicles, because the truck's height and bed length put a small child entirely inside the blind zone the camera exists to cover. FMVSS 111 was written for that geometry.
The good news for owners is the shape of this campaign. The remedy is ready, it ships over the air, there is no interim letter and no waiting period, and the trucks stay drivable throughout. Among the recalls Stellantis filed on September 1, this is the one that resolves fastest.
The part worth acting on is the double-campaign overlap. A 2026 Ram 1500 can sit in both 26V560 and 26V531, and taking the over-the-air update for one does not close the other. Running the VIN once the lookup goes live on September 9 is the only way to see both.
