2023-2025 Ford Mustang Mach-E Recall: Window Glass Trim Pieces May Detach
Recall Facts (from NHTSA)
- NHTSA Campaign ID
- 26V487000
- Announced
- 2026-07-28
- Units affected
- 86,543
- Defect
- Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2023-2025 Mustang Mach E vehicles. The rear side quarter window glass trim may be improperly secured, which can allow it to detach.
- Consequence
- Detached trim pieces can create a road hazard, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy
- Dealers will inspect and replace the quarter window glass assemblies, as necessary, free of charge. Interim letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, are expected to be mailed September 10, 2026. Additional letters will be sent once the remedy is available. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 26S56. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall will be searchable on NHTSA.gov beginning September 7, 2026.
Ford is recalling 86,543 Mustang Mach-E electric SUVs because a strip of exterior trim can come off the car while it is moving. NHTSA campaign 26V487000, filed July 28, 2026, covers 2023 through 2025 model year vehicles built between February 17, 2023 and October 8, 2024, whose rear side quarter window glass trim may be bonded poorly enough to let go.
A detached piece of that trim does not put the people inside the Mach-E at risk. Ford's Automotive Safety Office handed one to NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation on June 3, 2026, and ODI came back with a view on the edges: sharp enough to be a hazard to whoever is behind the car.
That assessment is what turned a warranty problem into a federal safety recall.
Ford estimates the defect is present in 1% of the recalled population, roughly 865 vehicles out of 86,543. The company has not finished the remedy. Owners get an interim letter in September describing the risk, and a second letter later once there is a repair to schedule.
The Issue
The rear side quarter window is the small fixed pane behind the rear door, tucked into the base of the C-pillar where the roofline starts its drop toward the tail. On the Mach-E the glass carries a black trim piece around its edge. That trim is bonded to the glass at the supplier, not bolted to the body, which means the entire attachment is chemistry.
Bonded assemblies like this depend on a primer that has to cure before the adhesive goes down. Cure time is not optional and it is not adjustable by feel. It is a fixed chemical window, and a joint assembled inside that window looks identical to a good one at the end of the line.
Ford traced the cause to an assembly jig at the supplier. A new jig cut the time required to install the trim onto the quarter glass, and the shortened cycle no longer left the primer long enough to cure. The bond came out weaker than specification on some parts, and nothing downstream would have caught it.
What finishes the job is the road. A trim strip on the outside of a car at highway speed has air working to lift it, and heat cycling and car wash pressure work on the same joint over years. A marginal bond survives the dealership and fails in traffic, which is why the warranty claims in this campaign stretch across nearly three years instead of clustering at delivery.
The parts are the left and right rear quarter window glass assemblies, Ford part numbers LJ8Z-5829727-A and LJ8Z-5829726-A, supplied by Saint-Gobain México at its plant in Cuautla.
Affected Models

| Ford Mustang Mach-E | 2023-2025 | Feb 17, 2023 - Oct 8, 2024 | 86,543 |
No other Ford or Lincoln model is included, and the campaign covers every Mach-E trim built in that window, not a subset. Ford bounded the population from supplier process records, which trace each quarter glass assembly to the vehicle it went into. The vehicles were not built in VIN order, so an owner cannot reason from a build date or a VIN block. The lookup is the only answer.
Chronology and Investigation
The trail starts inside Ford's warranty data. On May 4, 2026, the Product Development Body Exterior team brought a spike in claims for loose and detached quarter window trim on 2023 to 2025 Mach-E vehicles to the Automotive Safety Office. Ford's Critical Concern Review Group opened an investigation eight days later.
Through May and June the investigation team worked backward to the root cause and landed on February 2023, when the supplier introduced the faster assembly jig. The supplier had already fixed the process on September 28, 2024, adding a timer to the jig that blocks trim installation until 30 seconds have elapsed.
The recall population runs through October 8, 2024.
On June 3, 2026, Ford gave ODI a trim piece to look at. The response, that the edges could present a hazard to other road users, reframed the defect from a fit and finish complaint to a road hazard. In July, Ford's data analytics group modeled how many more pieces would come off over time, and the Field Review Committee approved a field action on July 21.
Reported Incidents
As of July 21, 2026, Ford counted 219 reports of loose or detached trim pieces on US vehicles from the affected build periods. Those warranty claims came in between July 31, 2023 and April 20, 2026.
Ford reports no accidents and no injuries connected to the condition. Nothing in the federal record carries a do-not-drive order or a park-outside advisory, and neither box is checked on the Part 573.
What Owners Should Do
September 3, 2026. Ford notifies dealers.
September 7, 2026. VINs become searchable at NHTSA. Before that date a 2023 to 2025 Mach-E will not return this campaign, so an owner checking now and finding nothing has learned nothing.
September 10 to 14, 2026. Interim letters mail, describing the safety risk. These letters do not come with a repair appointment.
Later, date not set. Remedy letters mail once parts and procedure are ready. Ford filed this as a phased recall and listed the remedy notification date as TBD.
Dealers will inspect the quarter window glass assemblies and replace them as necessary, free of charge. Ford customer service is 1-866-436-7332, and Ford's number for this recall is 26S56.
Symptoms to Watch For Before the Trim Detaches
Trim that sits proud of the glass. Ford names this one directly. A piece that looks loose or not fully seated against the quarter window has already lost part of its bond.
Wind noise that was not there before. A rushing or whistling sound near the rear side glass at highway speed, especially one that changes with crosswind.
A squeak or rattle from behind the rear door. Ford lists both. A partially bonded strip moves against the glass over bumps and telegraphs it into the cabin.
Movement under light hand pressure. A bonded trim piece should not shift at all. Any give at the edge is worth a photograph and a call.
A gap that catches water or dirt. A line of grime tracking along one edge of the trim marks a joint that is no longer sealed.
Any of these on a 2023 to 2025 Mach-E is worth reporting whether or not the VIN matches once the list goes live. A piece that departs on the highway becomes someone else's problem in the next lane.
How Long Will the Recall Repair Take?
Ford has not published a labor estimate. The remedy language matters more than the hours here, because it says inspect and replace the quarter window glass assemblies rather than reattach the trim. The trim and the glass come as one bonded unit, so a car that fails inspection needs new glass, not a new strip.
Inspection is quick. Replacement is a body glass job on a car whose rear quarter panel wraps tightly around that pane, and it depends on the assemblies being on the shelf. Ford filing this as a phased recall with no remedy date signals that supply is the constraint, which is also why the September letters are interim rather than an invitation to book.
How Much Should a Mach-E Owner Worry?
For the person driving the car, this is close to the low end of what a federal recall can mean. There is no fire path, no loss of control, no occupant exposure. The worst case for the owner is a missing piece of trim and a bill they should not have to pay.
The risk sits behind the car.
A rigid piece with sharp edges coming off a moving SUV is exactly the road debris that cracks a windshield or puts a motorcyclist into an avoidance maneuver, and that is the reason ODI weighed in and the reason 86,543 cars are in a campaign over a piece of decoration.
Owners who notice loose trim now, before the September letters, are worth a call to the dealer instead of waiting, because the piece that stays on the car is the one that never lands on somebody's hood.
