5 Affordable Cars For College Students On Budgets

Considering tuition, housing and other expenses, it’s common for college students not to be able to afford a car. However, students who live in remote areas and travel long distances need affordable cars.

Since many students are on tight budgets, luxurious models from Lexus or Cadillac are not likely under consideration. But there are many quality affordable cars available in the U.S. for students (and others) who have limited budgets.

Here are several budget-conscious affordable cars:

Honda Fit

A five-door subcompact, the Fit has an attractive exterior design and is available in several appealing colors. The base model with limited features is priced at $16,190. It has a manual transmission and no connectivity integration.

Models with more features are worth considering and result in wide-ranging pricing. Used Honda Fit models vary from $3,000 to $18,000, depending upon year and options. Fuel efficiency is 29 miles per gallon in city driving, 36 mpg on the highway. The Fit seats four and has good cargo space for the sub-compact segment. The Fit was discontinued in the U.S. after the 2020 model.

Toyota Yaris

Available as a hatchback or sedan and in gas and hybrid options, the compact Yaris is larger than its designation. It’s also fuel-efficient, averaging 32 mpg in city driving, 40 mpg on the highway with its traditional gas engine.

The Yaris has a unique exterior design and strong handling. It had a starting price new of $15,600 for the base model which includes lane-keeping assistance and a camera. Used Yaris models in excellent condition with options are priced from $10,000 to $12,000. The Yaris was discontinued after the 2020 model.

Chevrolet Spark

A compact hatchback available with a manual or continuously variable transmission, the base model Spark is priced at $13,400. It’s often been the country’s cheapest new car.

Despite its low price, the base model is equipped with a rearview camera, 10 airbags, a seven-inch touchscreen, and an integrated entertainment system. It also features power steering, electronic stability control and a tire pressure monitoring system.

Ford Ecosport

A crossover with a 1.0-liter Ecoboost engine, the sport utility vehicle has a start-stop engine feature that increases fuel efficiency. The EcoSport average 27 mpg in city driving, 29 mpg on the highway.

The spacious cabin makes the crossover versatile, good city and traditional freeway driving. But it’s also a good choice for more rural areas, varying road surfaces and for a group of friends.
