Leonardo DiCaprio is a well-known proponent of global warming issues. But the Academy Award winner is being criticized for his approach to hosting his Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation Annual Gala To Fund Climate and Biodiversity Projects.
The occasion will be held July 20 at the Bertaud Belieu Vineyards on the French Riviera. The actor is flying is top celebrity guests from around the world. Critics of DiCaprio, including the Daily Mirror newspaper in England, report guests’ travel will result in substantial overload of carbon dioxide greenhouse gas emissions.
The reception list includes: actors Kate Hudson, Charlize Theron, Cate Blanchett, Marion Cotillard, Penelope Cruz, Robert De Niro, Scarlett Johansson, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Kevin Spacey. A host of international rock and pop stars, supermodels and tycoons have also been invited.
Leonardo DiCaprio has three “green” cars
DiCaprio practices what he preaches in his personal car ownership. He owns three diverse electric cars, a Tesla Roadster, Fisker Karma and Toyota Prius.
Regardless, leading green advocates have been critical. They’ve asked why couldn’t DiCaprio’s event have been held in Hollywood or St. Tropez during May’s Cannes Film Festival. Many of his pending guests were in attendance.
According to Robert Rapier, an environmental analyst: “DiCaprio demonstrates why our consumption of fossil fuels continues to grow. It’s because everyone loves the combination of cost and convenience they offer.
The Mirror reported DiCaprio flew by private jet to New York from France. He attended the Cannes Film Festival to receive a ‘green’ award. He flew back the following day.
The newspaper also reported DiCaprio has flown more than 91,00 miles in 18 trips in the past several months.
