2026 Cadillac, GMC and Chevrolet Recall: Improperly Secured Module May Damage High Voltage Battery
Recall Facts (from NHTSA)
- NHTSA Campaign ID
- 26V494000
- Announced
- 2026-07-30
- Units affected
- 10
- Defect
- General Motors, LLC is recalling certain 2026 Cadillac Escalade IQ, Escalade IQL, GMC Sierra EV, and Chevrolet Silverado EV vehicles. The high voltage battery may have an improperly secured internal module component.
- Consequence
- A loose component may move and damage the high voltage battery, increasing the risk of a fire.
- Remedy
- Dealers will replace the high voltage battery, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed September 14, 2026. Owners may contact Cadillac customer service at 1-800-333-4223, GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782, and Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM's number for this recall is N262562600. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall became searchable on NHTSA.gov on July 30, 2026.
General Motors is replacing the entire high-voltage battery in ten trucks. NHTSA campaign 26V494000, filed July 30, 2026, covers 2026 Cadillac Escalade IQ and Escalade IQL, GMC Sierra EV, and Chevrolet Silverado EV vehicles whose packs may carry an improperly secured internal module component.
GM's language on the risk is direct. A loose component may move, damage the pack, and increase the risk of a fire. The remedy is not a software flash or a bracket. Dealers replace the high-voltage battery.
Ten vehicles is close to the smallest population a federal campaign ever carries, and the fix is close to the most expensive repair in the industry. That combination is the whole story here.
The Issue
An Ultium truck pack is not a box of cells bolted under the floor. It is a structural member with modules stacked in two tiers, and in these trucks it runs to roughly 205 kWh. A module component left unsecured inside that assembly has room to migrate, and anything migrating inside a live high-voltage pack is eventually going to contact something it should not.
GM did not describe a progressive failure or a mileage threshold. The filing says the component may be improperly secured and that movement can damage the battery. There is no inspection branch in the remedy, which is the detail worth reading twice. On a defect this hard to see from outside, GM chose to replace every suspect pack rather than open them and look.
Affected Models
| Vehicle | Model year | Brand |
|---|---|---|
| Escalade IQ | 2026 | Cadillac |
| Escalade IQL | 2026 | Cadillac |
| Sierra EV | 2026 | GMC |
| Silverado EV | 2026 | Chevrolet |
NHTSA gives a combined total of ten vehicles across all four nameplates and does not break the figure out by model. Every one of these rides on the same GM electric truck architecture, which is why a single pack-assembly error reaches four badges at once.
Fire Risk Without a Park-Outside Order
The filing flags fire but carries no park-it warning and no instruction to keep the trucks out of a garage. Both flags exist in the federal record and both are set to false.
That is a deliberate call. When regulators and a manufacturer believe a fire risk is near-term, owners get told to park outside and away from structures, as Chevrolet Bolt owners were during the pack recall that ran from 2020 into 2021. The absence of that instruction here says GM and NHTSA read this as a defect that could cause a fire under the wrong circumstances rather than one likely to start one soon.
Ten vehicles is also a manageable number to get off the road quickly, which changes the calculus. A campaign covering ten trucks can be closed out in weeks. A campaign covering a hundred thousand cannot, and that is when park-outside guidance starts doing real work.
Ten Vehicles, Twice
In May 2024 GM filed campaign 24V320000 covering 2024 Cadillac Lyriq, Chevrolet Blazer EV, Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC Hummer EV, and GMC Sierra EV trucks whose rear drive unit motors had insufficiently insulated wires. That campaign also covered exactly ten vehicles.
Two GM electric-vehicle campaigns, two years apart, each landing on ten vehicles, says something about how well GM can trace a suspect part through an Ultium build. A manufacturer without that traceability files the same recall across a full production window and replaces thousands of good packs to catch a handful of bad ones. GM found the ten.
What Owners Should Do
July 30, 2026. VINs became searchable at NHTSA. That date has passed, so any owner can check now.
September 14, 2026. GM mails owner notification letters.
On contact. Dealers replace the high-voltage battery, free of charge. Cadillac customer service is 1-800-333-4223, GMC is 1-800-462-8782, and Chevrolet is 1-800-222-1020. GM's number for this recall is N262562600.
An owner of any 2026 Escalade IQ, Escalade IQL, Sierra EV, or Silverado EV should run the VIN rather than assume ten vehicles will not include theirs. The odds are strongly in their favor, and the check takes a minute.
How Long Will the Recall Repair Take?
GM has not published a labor estimate, and a full pack replacement is not a same-day appointment. The pack is structural, the truck goes on a lift with a dedicated table, high-voltage disconnect and re-commissioning procedures bracket the work, and the replacement pack has to physically arrive first.
Expect a multi-day visit and ask about a loaner. On a ten-vehicle campaign GM has no parts-supply excuse, so the constraint is scheduling a shop with technicians certified for high-voltage pack work rather than waiting on inventory.
How Worried Should an Owner Be?
An owner whose VIN comes back clean has nothing to act on. An owner whose VIN matches should call the same day, not because the truck is likely to catch fire on the way home, but because a free replacement of the single most expensive component in the vehicle is not something to leave sitting.
The wider context is that GM filed two separate campaigns on these trucks on the same day. This one and a steel wheel recall covering 952 Silverado EV and Sierra EV pickups arrived together on July 30. Neither is large. Both landing at once on a truck line still early in its production life is the kind of thing worth watching across the next few filings.
