Defect
Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain 2022 Telluride vehicles. Excess adhesive in a circuit board within the instrument cluster may cause the instrument cluster display screen to be blank. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 101, "Control and Displays."
Consequence
A blank instrument cluster display screen will not show critical information, such as the odometer, which can increase the risk of a crash.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the instrument cluster assembly, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 15, 2022. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC237.
The Weekly Driver analysis

The instrument cluster screen on a 2022 Kia Telluride built between September 2021 and March 2022 can go blank because too much adhesive was laid on a circuit board inside it, leaving a poor electrical connection. With the screen dark, the driver cannot see the odometer.

Recall 22V344 covers 3,596 Tellurides built from September 9, 2021 through March 30, 2022, with either the 3.5-inch or the 7-inch cluster screen. Dealers replace the instrument cluster assembly free of charge under Kia campaign SC237.

The Issue

Hyundai Mobis builds the cluster at its Jincheon plant in South Korea. An incorrect setting on the supplier's die adhesive applicator put excess adhesive on a circuit board inside the assembly, and that excess can cause a poor electrical connection that blanks the LCD. Warning lamps and the systems behind the cluster keep working, according to Kia. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 101 requires the odometer to be visible to the driver, so a dark screen puts the car out of compliance.

The replacement cluster carries a circuit board without the excess adhesive. Mobis changed its adhesive application inspection on February 28, 2022, and Kia says no Telluride built after March 30, 2022 received a cluster made before that change. Three part numbers are involved: 94001-S9500 and 94001-S9510 for the 3.5-inch screen, which Kia's dealer bulletin assigns by LED or halogen headlights, and 94011-S9500 for the 7-inch screen.

The cars were not built in VIN order. Kia drew the list from its own and the supplier's production records, so a lookup by individual VIN settles whether a particular Telluride is included.

Chronology and Investigation

Two Techline cases about blank cluster screens reached Kia North America's Product Quality team on November 17, 2021. Through December 19, neither Product Quality nor Kia Georgia could reproduce the fault on collected clusters, so Kia Georgia sent assemblies to the supplier. On February 21, 2022 the supplier tied the condition to the applicator setting, and on March 8 it gave Kia Georgia the serial numbers from the suspect lot.

Kia Georgia X-rayed warranty-returned clusters between March 16 and April 21 and compared them with the supplier's account, then reported to Kia's Safety Office on April 22. Kia concluded on May 9 that the blank odometer broke the visibility requirement in FMVSS 101, paragraph S5.1.2, decided on May 10 to recall the cars and filed on May 17, 2022. That first filing covered 2,761 Tellurides with the 3.5-inch screen built through March 14, 2022.

While the replacement part was in development, between May 18 and June 17, the supplier found that 7-inch clusters could carry the same excess adhesive. Kia Georgia notified the Safety Office on June 21, Kia decided on June 27 to add the 7-inch cars, and the amended report filed June 29 raised the count to 3,596 and moved the end of the build window to March 30, 2022.

Kia's earlier cluster recall, 21V577, covered 5,143 Tellurides from the 2022 model year built May 26 through July 16, 2021, whose 3.5-inch screens could stay blank after a welcome animation took too long to load. Dealers fixed those with a software update. The two campaigns cover separate build windows, and neither filing refers to the other.

Reported Incidents

A review of field data on June 24, 2022 found no injuries or crashes from the blank screen, and the chronology lists no fatalities or fires. Beyond the two Techline cases that opened the investigation, the filing gives no complaint or warranty count. Kia estimates that 1 percent of the 3,596 cars have the defect, about 36 by my arithmetic.

What Owners Should Do

Owner letters went out July 15, 2022. Check the VIN at Kia's recall page or NHTSA.gov, or call Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542 and reference recall SC237. Kia pays for the new cluster. Its General Reimbursement Plan covers owners who paid for a fix before the notice; receipts go in through the Owners section of kia.com or by mail with the form in the owner letter.

If the screen goes blank before the recall work is done, Kia's letter asks owners to book a dealer appointment as soon as possible and offers towing through Kia Roadside Assistance at kia.rsahelp.com or 1-800-333-4542.

Kia's annual report filed July 29, 2026 counts 3,232 of the 3,596 Tellurides as remedied, 106 as unreachable and 18 as scrapped, stolen or exported. By my arithmetic, 240 reachable cars still have the recall open.

Symptoms to Watch For Before the Cluster Fails

A blank cluster screen. The LCD goes dark and takes the odometer with it, while the warning lights carry on, according to Kia's owner letter. The filings describe no other warning sign.

How Long Will the Recall Repair Take?

Kia's owner letter puts the visit at one to two hours, depending on the dealer's schedule. The dealer bulletin lists 0.6 hours of labor for the cluster swap. Technicians note the mileage on the old cluster before removing it and run Kia's cluster variant coding on the new one.

Bottom Line

A failed cluster leaves the driver with working warning lamps and no odometer, and 240 reachable Tellurides were still waiting for the new part as of July 2026. An open recall transfers with the vehicle when it is sold, so anyone who bought a 2022 Telluride built between September 2021 and March 2022 from a Kia dealer or a private seller should run the VIN.

Recall 22V344 (May 2022, expanded June 29, 2022) covers 3,596 2022 Tellurides built September 9, 2021 through March 30, 2022 with 3.5-inch or 7-inch cluster screens. Excess adhesive on a cluster circuit board can blank the screen and hide the odometer; dealers replace the instrument cluster.
