Defect
Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain 2022 Sorento and Telluride vehicles. The vehicles may be equipped with an incorrect spare tire which, when installed, can impair the anti-lock braking system (ABS) and the traction control system (TCS). As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 110, "Tire Selection and Rims."
Consequence
Impaired anti-lock braking or traction control systems can increase the risk of a crash.
Remedy
Dealers will inspect and replace the spare tire, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 27, 2022. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC244.
The Weekly Driver analysis

Eight 2022 Kia Telluride and Sorento SUVs left Kia's West Point, Georgia, plant carrying a temporary spare that may be the wrong size, and mounting that spare can impair the anti-lock brakes and traction control. An assembly worker installed the incorrect spare on the production line.

Recall 22V509, filed July 19, 2022, covers three Tellurides built June 10 through June 13, 2022 and five Sorentos built March 28 through June 10, 2022.

The Issue

Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 110, section S4.3, requires the tire placard on the driver's door pillar to give the size of every tire the vehicle carries, the spare included. On these SUVs the spare stowed under the rear of the vehicle may not match the size printed on that placard. Kia's filing puts the share of the population with the defect at 100 percent.

Kia's Part 573 report says an incorrect-size spare "can adversely affect the anti-lock braking system (ABS) and or traction control system (TCS) thereby increasing the risk of a crash," and the owner letter ties that risk to driving with the spare installed.

The right temporary spare for the Sorento is a T135/90D17 on a 17-inch wheel, part number 52919-R5100. The Telluride takes a T155/90R18 on an 18-inch wheel, part number 52919-L0950. A dealer reads the spare's size, compares it with the door jamb label, and swaps in a new wheel and tire only when the two differ.

These vehicles were not built in VIN order, so Kia drew the list from production and inspection records, and a lookup by individual VIN settles whether a given SUV is included. Kia Georgia put a new protocol on the assembly line on June 22, 2022 to make sure each vehicle receives its correct spare.

Chronology and Investigation

Kia Georgia caught an incorrect spare on a 2022 Telluride during its post-assembly vehicle inspection on June 22, 2022. The next day the plant began inspecting vehicle stock and opened an internal investigation. By June 28 it had identified eight vehicles, three Tellurides and five Sorentos, already shipped to U.S. Kia dealers with a spare that might be the wrong size, and it told Kia North America's product quality group, which passed the case to the Safety Office.

On July 11, Kia North America concluded that the gap between the spare's actual size and the size on the placard broke section S4.3 of the standard, and it decided on a noncompliance recall the following day. The Part 573 report went to NHTSA on July 19 and dealers were notified July 20. A revision dated July 22 added reimbursement under Kia's General Reimbursement Plan for owners who had already paid for a repair.

Reported Incidents

Kia's chronology records no customer complaints, dealer technical hotline cases or warranty claims, and no crashes, injuries, fatalities or fires.

What Owners Should Do

Owner letters went out July 27, 2022. Check the VIN at Kia's recall page or NHTSA.gov, or call Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542 and reference Kia recall SC244. The inspection and any spare replacement are free, and Kia reimburses owners who paid for a related repair beforehand; receipts go in through the Owners section of kia.com or by mail with the form included in the owner letter.

Until the dealer has done the work, Kia's letter asks owners whose spare is already mounted at one of the four wheel positions, or who get a flat, to read the dimensions on the spare's sidewall. If they do not match the placard on the driver's door pillar, the letter says to leave the spare off and call Kia Roadside Assistance at kia.rsahelp.com or 800-333-4542 for a tow.

Federal law bars a dealer from delivering a new vehicle covered by the recall, by sale or lease, until the remedy is done. Kia's annual report filed July 29, 2026 lists seven of the eight as remedied, a total that also includes any vehicle inspected and found not to need the repair, with none unreachable or removed from service. By my arithmetic, that leaves one SUV with the recall open.

Symptoms to Watch For Before the Spare Goes On

A sidewall size that differs from the placard. Kia's report lists no warning that can occur, which leaves the size printed on the spare as the check: T135/90D17 on a Sorento and T155/90R18 on a Telluride, matching the door pillar label.

How Long Will the Recall Repair Take?

Kia's warranty schedule allows 0.2 hours for the inspection alone and 0.5 hours when the spare wheel and tire are replaced. The owner letter estimates the visit at about one hour. Dealers order the steel wheel from Kia's parts distribution center and the tire through Dealer Tire, a Continental for the Sorento and a Kumho for the Telluride, and source the valve stem locally.

Bottom Line

The hazard exists only while a wrong-size spare is mounted, and it reaches at most eight SUVs. For the owner of the one my arithmetic leaves open, the time to find out is before a flat, by matching the spare's sidewall to the door pillar placard.

An open recall transfers with the vehicle when it is sold. Anyone who bought a used 2022 Telluride or Sorento from a Kia dealer or a private seller should run the VIN rather than assume the inspection was done.

Recall 22V509 (July 2022) covers three 2022 Tellurides built June 10-13, 2022 and five 2022 Sorentos built March 28 to June 10, 2022 that left Kia Georgia with a spare tire whose size does not match the door pillar placard. Dealers inspect the spare and replace the wheel and tire if the size is wrong. Kia's July 2026 annual report counts seven of the eight as remedied.
