BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2022-2026 840i, 840i xDrive, 2021-2023 540i, 540i xDrive, M550i xDrive, and 2024-2026 750e xDrive vehicles. The connection between the driveshaft and the rear differential may become damaged, possibly resulting in a loss of power to the rear wheels or a vehicle rollaway.
Consequence
An unexpected loss of drive power can increase the risk of a crash. In addition, a damaged driveshaft can result in a vehicle rollaway if the parking brake is not applied, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.
Remedy
Dealers will inspect the connection between the driveshaft and rear axle differential, and apply adhesive or replace the driveshaft and rear axle differential, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed October 2, 2026. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall will become searchable on NHTSA.gov beginning October 2, 2026.

BMW filed campaign 26V525000 with NHTSA on August 12, 2026, covering 27,720 cars across three model lines and six model years. The connection wears over time. When it goes far enough, the rear wheels stop receiving power.

There is a second failure mode in the filing that owners should read carefully. A car with a damaged driveshaft can roll away if the parking brake is not set.

The Issue

A driveshaft carries torque from the transmission back to the rear differential, and the two meet at a joint that has to transmit everything the engine makes without slipping. BMW's description of the defect is one sentence: that connection may, over time, be subject to excessive wear.

Lose the joint and the rear wheels are no longer driven. On the rear-drive 540i and 840i that means no power at all. On the xDrive cars the front axle continues to work, which changes the character of the failure without removing it.

The rollaway risk follows from where a transmission's park mechanism sits. Park locks the driveline on the transmission side of that joint. If the joint has failed, the lock no longer reaches the rear wheels, and the car is free to move on a grade. An electronic parking brake clamps the rear wheels themselves, which is why BMW's safety statement turns on whether the parking brake was applied.

BMW twice describes these outcomes as occurring in rare cases, and reports no accidents or injuries.

The list crosses platforms and generations, taking in the previous 5 Series, the 8 Series across most of its run, and the plug-in hybrid 7 Series. What ties them together is the driveshaft and differential interface rather than any shared body or engine.

Chronology and Investigation

BMW opened an engineering investigation in December 2024 after field incidents began climbing.

A parts return program followed in the first quarter of 2025, aimed at high-mileage cars because those matched the incident pattern. The first examinations looked at the interface between the driveshaft and the rear axle differential.

What came next reads like a catalogue of everything a manufacturer can throw at a problem. Finite element modeling of surface pressure at the joint ran from the first quarter of 2025 into the third. BMW pulled enterprise-wide production data and compared it across assembly plants hunting for anomalies. Bench tests tried to recreate the damage seen on returned parts. Metallurgical testing assessed the material properties of the drivetrain components. Engineers went through the supplier's production process and inspected parts for build quality.

Through the rest of 2025 and into the second quarter of 2026 the work widened to comparisons against other BMW models, other driveshaft designs and other build configurations, plus multi-body simulation of bending angles across different axle setups and propeller shaft mounting positions. BMW kept watching the field and ran Weibull analyses to forecast how the failures would accumulate.

BMW decided on a voluntary recall on August 5, 2026, twenty months after the investigation opened.

What the Filing Does Not Say

The cause field in BMW's Part 573 report is blank.

After the modeling, the metallurgy, the cross-plant data comparison and the bench work, the document describes where the wear happens and what it leads to without naming what drives it. The remedy offers a clue the text does not: bonding a joint with adhesive addresses movement at an interface that was meant to hold by fit alone.

What Owners Should Do

The dealer inspects the connection first. Cars that pass get adhesive applied to the joint. Cars where the wear has gone further get a new driveshaft and rear axle differential. Both paths are free.

BMW has issued no do-not-drive or park-outside advisory. Owners who already paid for this repair may be eligible for reimbursement under BMW Group's plan per 49 CFR 573.13 and 577.11.

Symptoms to Watch For

A clunk from under the car on throttle changes. A worn joint has play in it, and play shows up when torque reverses between coasting and accelerating.

Vibration through the floor that builds with speed. Driveline wear tends to announce itself as a frequency tied to road speed instead of engine speed.

Engine revs that climb without matching acceleration. On a rear-drive 540i or 840i this is the failure arriving. On an xDrive car the front axle masks part of it.

The car creeping in Park. Any movement with the transmission in Park and the parking brake off deserves immediate attention, and the parking brake should go on until a dealer has looked at it.

Higher mileage. BMW's parts return program targeted high-mileage cars because that is where the field incidents were concentrated.

How Long Will the Recall Repair Take?

An inspection with adhesive applied is a short visit, likely inside a couple of hours including the time to get the car up and the joint accessible.

The replacement path is a different job. Pulling a driveshaft and a rear axle differential on these cars is a half day or more, and parts for six model years across three platforms will not sit on every dealer's shelf. The inspection result determines which of those two afternoons an owner gets.

How Worried Should a BMW Owner Be?

BMW's own framing is that both outcomes are rare, the company knows of no accidents or injuries, and the population is small at 27,720 cars.

Weigh that against what failure looks like. Losing drive to the rear wheels on a rear-drive car in traffic is a genuine hazard, and a car that rolls away from a parking spot is a hazard to whatever it rolls into.

The practical step before October costs nothing. Use the parking brake, listen for driveline noise, and book the inspection when the letter arrives.
