The Weekly Driver analysis

On July 8, 2026, BMW filed two safety recalls with federal regulators four and a half hours apart. Together they cover 347,614 vehicles in the United States, and both concern the same part: an engine starter built by the French supplier Valeo. One of the two campaigns tells owners to park outside and away from buildings. The other does not. Which category a given car falls into depends on how its starter fails, and the distinction is the most useful thing an affected owner can know.

The larger filing, NHTSA campaign 26V438000, covers 318,495 gasoline models running BMW's four-cylinder engine, from the X3 and X4 through the 2, 3, 4, and 5 Series and the Z4. It also sweeps in 270 examples of the Toyota Supra, which uses BMW's four-cylinder and its starter. The smaller filing, 26V441000, covers 29,119 plug-in hybrids sold between the 2016 and 2020 model years. That is the one carrying the park-outside advisory, and it drew almost no coverage.

Neither campaign began this year. BMW has now recalled 634,682 vehicles across four campaigns in ten months over Valeo starters, working through the population in stages as engineering kept finding groups of cars it had not yet covered.

The Issue

Two different failure modes are at work, which is why the owner guidance splits.

The gasoline campaign is a wear problem. A starter motor turns the engine over through a set of brushes and a commutator, and metal-on-metal contact sheds material every time it runs. BMW's filing describes a buildup of metallic debris inside the starter caused by abrasion, accumulating over time and after a large number of starting attempts. As the debris collects it creates paths for current where none should exist. The immediate symptom is an engine that cranks poorly or refuses to start. The filing's description of the safety risk is narrower and more serious: in an extreme case, this could cause a thermal event or fire when starting the engine, or while the engine is running.

The plug-in hybrid campaign is a corrosion problem, and the difference matters. Water can reach the starter's electrical relay, and over time the relay corrodes. Corrosion inside the relay degrades the electrical connection, and BMW's filing states that it can also produce a short circuit and overheating. The consequence line is what separates this campaign from the other one: a thermal event during vehicle operation, or when the vehicle is parked and the ignition is off. A component that can overheat with the car switched off and nobody in it is why NHTSA titles this campaign "Park Outside: Engine Starter May Corrode and Overheat."

BMW puts the estimated share of affected vehicles at 0.1 percent in both filings, then adds a note that is rare in this paperwork: the calculated number is much lower, but the reporting portal does not accept a value below 0.1 percent. The company is telling regulators its real defect rate is smaller than the form can express.

Six-cylinder and eight-cylinder models are outside both campaigns. BMW's engineering work has consistently targeted cars built with the four-cylinder engine, and the plug-in hybrids in the second filing use that engine as well. Toyota runs its Supra repair under its own campaign number, 26TA04, which the company updated on July 8, 2026 to add the 2024 model year.

Chronology and Investigation

The first campaign landed on September 23, 2025. BMW recalled 199,674 vehicles under 25V636000 for the starter relay corrosion problem, with a park-outside advisory attached. VINs went searchable that November and owner letters mailed February 6, 2026.

On January 30, 2026, BMW filed a second and separate campaign, 26V056000, covering 87,394 vehicles for the different problem: metallic buildup inside the starter motor itself. Owners of those cars received a letter on March 27, 2026 telling them their vehicle carried a fire risk, and a second letter would follow once a remedy existed. That gap between notification and available repair ran for months.

Engineering kept working the field data after both campaigns launched. BMW's chronology for the July filing describes continued investigation focused on remaining groups of four-cylinder cars not yet covered, including vehicles whose starters came from a different Valeo production facility. In February 2026 the company began collecting and tearing down starters pulled from customer cars, including cars nobody had complained about. Three field incidents surfaced during this period: a 2023 4 Series Convertible outside the United States in February 2026, a 2023 X3 outside the United States in March, and a 2021 X3 in the United States dating to November 2025. A reexamination of the earlier testing was inconclusive. Between March and June, returned starters were disassembled and evaluated, and the preliminary finding was that units from the second plant could suffer the same abrasion condition.

That determination produced 26V438000 on July 8. The same day, a parallel investigation into the plug-in hybrids, which BMW notes had been examined previously, produced 26V441000. The trigger there was a field incident involving a 2018 5 Series in the United States, reported in November 2024 and known to BMW by December.

Reported Incidents

BMW has told NHTSA it is aware of no accidents or injuries connected to either July campaign. The field incidents named in the chronology are thermal events involving four vehicles across two continents, against a combined population above 600,000 cars. Set against the exposure, the rate is low, and BMW's own filing says the true defect percentage is below the 0.1 percent floor the federal form allows.

Low is not zero, and the failure mode is fire. The plug-in hybrid campaign is the one to take seriously on timing, because its defect can produce heat in a parked car with the ignition off.

What Owners Should Do

Owner notification letters for both July campaigns mail August 28, 2026, and VINs become searchable at NHTSA.gov the same day. That is a seven-week gap between the filing and the point at which an owner can confirm inclusion, which is longer than most campaigns run.

Owners of the 2016 to 2020 plug-in hybrids covered by 26V441000 should park outside and away from structures until the starter is replaced. BMW's remedy language states this directly. It applies to the 330e, 530e, 530e xDrive, and 740Le, and it applies whether or not the car is showing any symptom.

Owners of the gasoline models under 26V438000 have no interim restriction. NHTSA's park-it and park-outside flags for that campaign are both false, and the remedy carries no special instruction beyond scheduling the repair. Anyone whose car was covered by the January campaign, 26V056000, and who never received a follow-up letter should call rather than wait, since that population has been living with an open recall and no remedy since March.

How Long Will the Recall Repair Take?

The fix is a starter replacement, free of charge, and BMW is fitting a unit of a different design rather than another of the same part. On a transverse or longitudinal four-cylinder the starter sits low on the engine at the bellhousing, and reaching it usually means dropping underbody shielding and working around the exhaust. Toyota's published instructions for the Supra include removing front suspension member protection hardware and note that the replacement starter is physically smaller than the one coming out, with a different grommet.

Expect the car to be at the dealer for most of a day. The larger constraint is supply rather than labor. BMW is replacing starters on a population that has grown from 199,674 to 634,682 across ten months, and the January campaign already demonstrated what happens when the recall arrives before the parts do.

Bottom Line

Four campaigns, two failure modes, one supplier, and a population that has more than tripled since the first filing. The through line is a company finding the edges of a supplier problem in stages, which is a defensible way to run an investigation and a frustrating one to own a car through. Each expansion has meant another group of owners learning their car was in scope all along.

For most owners the practical answer is short. If the car is a 2016 to 2020 plug-in hybrid, park it outside starting now and call BMW. If it is a gasoline four-cylinder from the affected years, note the August 28 date, run the VIN then, and schedule the starter replacement without treating it as an emergency. The individual risk is genuinely small. The reason to act on it anyway is that the consequence, when it lands, is a fire, and BMW has spent ten months discovering that the population was larger than it thought.

The July 8, 2026 filing was a double: 26V438000 (318,495 gasoline four-cylinder models, no park-outside advisory) and 26V441000 (29,119 plug-in hybrids, park-outside advisory). Trade coverage picked up the larger campaign and missed the smaller one, which is the campaign that carries the interim owner restriction. The two are expansions of separate predecessor recalls, 26V056000 (January 30, 2026, 87,394 units, starter motor abrasion) and 25V636000 (September 23, 2025, 199,674 units, starter relay corrosion). Cumulative US population across all four is 634,682.

Historical context

The January 2026 campaign notified owners of a fire risk on March 27, 2026 while stating that a remedy was not yet available and a second letter would follow. That pattern, a safety notification that arrives months ahead of a usable repair, is the recurring cost of staged supplier investigations and is worth tracking as the July campaigns move toward their August 28 VIN go-live.
