Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2025-2026 Camry Hybrid vehicles. The instrument cluster display may fail during vehicle startup, deactivating the hazard lights, turn signals, seat belt warning system, and smart key reminder. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) numbers 101, "Control and Displays," 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices and Associated Equipment," 114, "Theft Protection and Rollaway Prevention," and 208, "Occupant Crash Protection."
Consequence
An instrument cluster that fails to display critical safety information increases the risk of a crash or injury.
Remedy
Dealers will update the display software, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed September 21, 2026. Owners may contact Toyota's customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's numbers for this recall are 26TB16 and 26TA16.
The Weekly Driver analysis

The driver turns the key on a 2025 Toyota Camry Hybrid and the 7-inch instrument display comes up blank. The speedometer is gone, and so are the warning lamps. The turn signals no longer flash, the hazard button does nothing, and the seat belt chime stays silent.

Toyota filed campaign 26V511000 with NHTSA on August 6, 2026 covering 508,354 Camry Hybrids built between August 15, 2024 and June 9, 2026.

This is a noncompliance recall, not a defect recall. Toyota determined the cars fall short of four separate Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards at once: 101 on controls and displays, 108 on lamps and reflective devices, 114 on theft protection and rollaway prevention, and 208 on occupant crash protection.

The Issue

The combination meter in these cars is a Visteon unit that does more than show a speed. It drives the telltales, the turn signal and hazard indicators, and several of the warning buzzers, including the seat belt reminders and the alert for a key left in the ignition.

An error can occur in that meter's software initialization sequence when the car starts. When it does, the screen stays dark. The functions the meter controls go with it.

The lost turn signals matter more than the blank screen. A dark instrument panel is a driver's problem, and a driver who cannot see a telltale has lost the warning that something else is wrong. Signals and hazards are how the car talks to everyone else on the road, and Toyota's filing describes the risk in exactly those terms: other road users lose the ability to recognize the driver's intent to change direction or flag a hazard.

The seat belt reminder falls under the same failure. An occupant who does not buckle up gets no prompt.

Toyota made the current Camry hybrid-only for the United States when the ninth generation arrived for 2025, so the recall population is close to every Camry the company built across that 22-month window. The affected part numbers are combination meters 83800-AQ020 and 83800-AQ021.

Chronology and Investigation

Reports of a blank meter at startup started reaching Toyota in July 2024, a month before the production window in this recall even opens. Parts came back from the field and went to Visteon. The supplier could not make the fault happen again.

That stalemate held for more than a year. From October 2025, working through additional reports and suspecting a software initialization problem, Toyota and Visteon built special equipment capable of pulling detailed data off cars that had experienced the condition. With that data the supplier managed a bench reproduction of a blank meter resembling what owners described.

Power-cycle bench testing through April 2026 produced nothing. The fault would not appear on a meter sitting on a bench.

In June 2026 the two companies moved to testing on a complete vehicle. In late July they induced the software initialization error on a whole car and watched the meter go blank. The same test run surfaced something the earlier work had missed: the condition also disables the turn signals and hazard lamps and interferes with the warning buzzers.

Toyota determined the noncompliance on July 31, 2026 and filed with NHTSA six days later. Two years and one week separate the first owner reports from the recall decision.

What the Filing Does Not Say

Toyota's Part 573 report gives no count of warranty claims, field technical reports or owner complaints tied to this condition, and it lists no crashes or injuries. The chronology confirms reports arrived starting in July 2024 without saying how many.

The report also leaves the cause field blank. Toyota describes where the error occurs and what it breaks, and stops short of explaining what triggers a bad initialization on one start and not the next.

What Owners Should Do

Owner notification letters go out beginning September 21, 2026, with mailing complete by October 5.

Dealers will reflash the combination meter software at no charge. Toyota is running the campaign under its numbers 26TB16 and 26TA16, and customer service is at 1-800-331-4331.

Toyota flagged this repair as a dealer visit and not an over-the-air update, so all 508,354 cars need to physically show up somewhere. Every affected car remains inside the Toyota New Vehicle Limited Warranty, which is why the filing sets no separate reimbursement terms. Owners who already paid for a related repair have a warranty claim rather than a recall claim.

Toyota has issued no do-not-drive or park-outside advisory.

Symptoms to Watch For

A dark instrument display at startup. The screen stays blank when the car comes on. Toyota ties the error to the startup sequence, so a car that displays normally on one start can fail on the next.

Turn signals that do not flash. Check for the arrow indicators and the clicking. A stalk that produces neither is showing the same fault as the blank screen.

A dead hazard button. Press it and watch for the exterior lamps. A car stopped in a live lane with no hazards gives traffic behind it nothing to react to.

Silence where a chime belongs. No seat belt reminder, and no alert when the key is left in the ignition.

Missing warning lamps. With the meter blank there is no low fuel, no check engine, no tire pressure warning. The absence of a warning is not the absence of a problem.

How Long Will the Recall Repair Take?

A software update to a single module is short work, and the car should be back in an hour or less once a technician has it on the lift.

Scheduling is the real cost. Half a million cars against Toyota's US dealer network means the calendar backs up even though each individual job is quick, and Toyota is spreading owner letters over a two-week window in September and October to meter the flow.

How Worried Should a Camry Owner Be?

The failure is intermittent and the fix is free, which puts this well below a mechanical recall in day-to-day risk. Nothing here strands a car or catches fire.

The part that deserves attention is what happens on the road when it does occur. Driving without turn signals or hazards removes the car's ability to warn anyone else what it is about to do, and the driver may not notice the signals are dead while watching traffic instead of a blank dash.

An owner who has seen a blank display even once has grounds to call the dealer now instead of waiting for the September letter. An owner who has never seen it can book the update when the mail arrives.
