Remedy
Dealers will replace the roof rack crossbar pivot bolts, free of charge. Interim notification letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, are expected to be mailed October 8, 2026. A second notice will be sent once the final remedy is available. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is 81D. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall will become searchable on NHTSA.gov on September 17, 2026.
The Weekly Driver analysis

A roof crossbar that leaves a Jeep Wagoneer at speed lands in the lane behind it. Stellantis has recalled 97,349 Wagoneer, Wagoneer L, Grand Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer L vehicles because the pivot bolts on the roof rack crossbars may not have been tightened to specification.

NHTSA campaign 26V584, filed September 10, 2026, carries Stellantis recall number 81D. The Part 573 report puts the estimated share of the population with the defect at 100 percent, and the remedy is a repair on every vehicle.

The Issue

Each crossbar has a pivot joint, and a pivot bolt clamps that joint closed. The clamp load from the bolt is what keeps the crossbar fixed against wind at highway speed and against whatever is strapped to it. A bolt tightened below its torque specification supplies less clamp load, road vibration works the joint looser over time, and once the joint opens the crossbar can separate from the rail.

Stellantis left the "description of the cause" field on its Part 573 blank. The filing says the bolts were insufficiently torqued and that the suspect population was determined using supplier and vehicle production records, but it does not say whether the torque miss happened at the supplier or on the assembly line. The crossbars come from MINTH - Plastic Trim International of East Tawas, Michigan, under six part numbers: 68747056AA, 68529228AA, 68529228AB, 68442426AA, 68442426AB and 68442426AC.

The replacement pivot bolts are a different design from the original bolts. The report does not describe what changed, and the field for how and when the condition was corrected in production is also empty. The suspect build window closes on October 30, 2025 for the Grand Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer L, and on October 9 and 10, 2025 for the Wagoneer L and Wagoneer, dates Stellantis describes as the point when vehicles were no longer equipped with suspect crossbars.

Two conditions take a vehicle out of scope. It was built after the suspect window, or it left the factory without roof crossbars. The standard-length Wagoneer accounts for 54,249 of the 97,349 vehicles, more than the other three models combined.

NHTSA files all four under the Jeep make. Stellantis launched the 2022 models as "Wagoneer by Jeep," a premium extension of the brand, with no Jeep badge on the body; the Jeep badge arrived with the 2026 Grand Wagoneer. The Grand Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer L populations run through the 2026 model year; the Wagoneer and Wagoneer L stop at 2025.

Chronology and Investigation

Stellantis' Technical Safety and Regulatory Compliance group opened an investigation on June 25, 2026. From that date through August 19, TSRC met with Engineering and Manufacturing to review vehicle production records and design changes to the crossbar, working out root cause, customer consequence and vehicle scope.

The Vehicle Regulations Committee determined that a safety defect existed on September 3, 2026. The Part 573 reached NHTSA on September 10, and the agency acknowledged it on September 16 with a note that an amended report is required once Stellantis has a final-remedy notification date.

The chronology does not say what prompted the June investigation. The earliest warranty claim Stellantis connects to the condition dates to May 3, 2023, more than three years before TSRC opened its file.

Reported Incidents

As of August 31, 2026, Stellantis counted 15 warranty claims potentially related to the condition across all markets, with dates of receipt running from May 3, 2023 to May 29, 2026. It reported no customer assistance records and no field reports.

The company states it is aware of no accidents and no injuries in any market. Fifteen claims against a population Stellantis estimates is 100 percent defective works out to about one claim for every 6,500 vehicles.

Remedy and Notification

Stellantis will repair the pivot joints on the crossbars at no charge. NHTSA's summary describes the work as replacing the pivot bolts.

Dealers were to be notified on September 17, 2026, the same day VINs became searchable on NHTSA.gov. Interim owner letters describing the safety risk mail October 8 and 9. The Planned Remedy Owner Notification Date on the report is blank and the schedule is marked as a phased recall, so the first letter will arrive without a repair to book against it. A second notice follows once the remedy is available.

Stellantis has not issued a do-not-drive or park-outside advisory. Owners can reach Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403 and should reference recall 81D.

Symptoms to Watch For Before a Crossbar Detaches

Stellantis lists three warning signs on the Part 573, and each is something an owner can check without tools.

A rattle from the roof. Stellantis names a rattling noise first. A crossbar with a loose pivot bolt moves in its joint over rough pavement, and the sound comes from directly overhead.

A missing bolt at either end of a crossbar. Look at each pivot joint on the crossbar. The filing describes customers noticing that the crossbar is missing a bolt.

A crossbar that has come apart at the pivot joint. Stellantis lists this third, and by this point the failure has already happened.

A crossbar that shifts by hand. This check is ours, not the filing's. With the vehicle parked, grip the crossbar near each end and try to move it. A joint at full torque does not give.

How Long Will the Recall Repair Take?

Replacing pivot bolts on two crossbars is short work once parts are in hand. The technician removes the old bolt at each pivot joint, fits the redesigned bolt, and torques it to specification. By our estimate, most owners should be in and out well inside an hour. Stellantis has published no labor time for recall 81D.

The wait is for the bolt itself. The replacement is a new design, it has to exist in quantity for 97,349 vehicles, and the filing gives no date for when dealers will have it.

Bottom Line

The hazard falls mostly on the vehicle behind. A crossbar on the pavement is a road hazard for other drivers, and the filing says a resulting crash comes without prior warning. Stellantis counts 15 claims and no accidents over three years, and it also estimates that every vehicle in the population carries the under-torqued bolts.

Until the redesigned bolts arrive, check the pivot joints on both crossbars before loading anything on the roof, and treat a new rattle from overhead as a reason to pull over and look. Owners who carry a cargo box or bike rack on the crossbars have the most riding on that joint. Run the VIN through NHTSA.gov; the list has been live since September 17. The October letter will describe the risk and will not carry a repair date.
