The engine at the center of it, the 3.4-liter twin-turbo V35A, is the one that replaced the Tundra's old 5.7-liter V8 in the 2022 redesign. The gas version is the one under recall. The i-FORCE MAX hybrid, which pairs the same engine family with an electric motor, has been excluded from the engine-debris campaigns.

The Issue

The V35A is a machined aluminum block, and machining leaves metal debris behind. On a clean assembly line that debris is flushed out before the engine is sealed. On the affected engines, some of it stayed inside.

Under load, that loose material migrates through the oil system to the crankshaft main bearings, the plain bearings that let the crank spin inside the block. Debris scores the bearing surface, the clearance opens up, and oil pressure at that journal drops. The result is bearing wear that announces itself as a deep knock, then rough running, then in the worst case a seized or stalled engine. NHTSA's remedy targets the number one main bearing specifically, which is where the failures have concentrated.

Toyota's fix is a two-part inspection. Dealers read the engine's drive data and run vehicle inspection software to judge whether a given truck's number one bearing is compromised. Trucks that pass keep their engines. Trucks that fail get a complete engine replacement, free of charge.

The recalls apply to the gasoline V35A only. Tundras built with the i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain are not part of these campaigns, and no Tundra built before the 2022 redesign is affected, since those trucks used the naturally aspirated 5.7-liter V8.

The first recall, 24V381000, landed on May 30, 2024, and covered 2022-2023 Tundra and Lexus LX600 vehicles. It followed a run of field reports and warranty claims describing knocking and stalling on low-mileage trucks, unusual for an engine barely two years into production.
