Silverado 1500 (T1XX)
NHTSA Safety Ratings About NHTSA ratings
Reliability Overview
The 2019-2025 Silverado 1500 launched on GM's T1XX platform alongside the redesigned Tahoe, Suburban, and GMC Yukon family. Across seven model years, NHTSA has logged 3,414 owner complaints, 31 recall campaigns, and 40 fire reports. The record is concentrated rather than uniform: one engine drives the majority of the complaint count, and one recent connecting-rod recall complicates the alternative.
The 5.3L V8 with Dynamic Fuel Management (the L84) accounts for 1,719 of the 3,414 complaints, more than the other eleven powertrains combined. Transmission failures lead its weakness list at 559 reports, engine problems follow at 498, and electrical complaints add 378. The 2.7L turbo four (335 complaints) and the 3.0L Duramax diesel (201 on the original LM2, plus 128 on the LZ0 update that replaced it in 2023) all carry 'avoid' or 'caution' ratings.
The 6.2L V8 (L87) sits a tier above at 'caution' with 797 complaints, but its safety record was complicated in April 2025 by NHTSA campaign 25V274. GM recalled 2021-2024 trucks with the 6.2 for connecting rod and crankshaft manufacturing defects that could cause engine damage and failure, a campaign that also pulled in the Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon, and Escalade siblings. Diesel-equipped trucks have their own pair: 24V797 in October 2024 for a transmission control valve that could lock the rear wheels under load, then a re-do (26V083) in February 2026 for vehicles repaired incorrectly the first time. Early-year 2019-2020 trucks were also hit with multiple electronic-brake-module software recalls that could disable stability control and antilock brakes without warning lights.
The Silverado EV is the only powertrain in this generation rated 'recommended' with more than ten reports against it: 36 complaints across the 2024-2025 launch years yield a 3.8 rating. The early data is thin, and the EV inherits the platform-wide Ultium recall stack that has hit the Hummer EV, Blazer EV, and Lyriq alongside it. Even so, the gas and diesel options in the same generation rate worse on the long-form complaint record.
For gas Silverado shoppers, the cleanest visible option is the 4.3L V6 in its SIDI configuration: a 'caution' rating at 3.1 with 118 complaints across 2019-2021 model years. Buyers willing to forgo V8 power have the strongest record among the gas options. The 5.3L L84 is the most common and the worst-rated. The 6.2L L87 was the second-rank alternative until the April 2025 connecting-rod recall complicated it. Both the 2.7L turbo four and the 3.0L Duramax diesel rate 'avoid'. The L8T 6.6L gasoline V8 and the LC9 flex-fuel 5.3L both rate 'recommended' but appear in single-digit complaint counts and live below the 10-complaint visibility threshold on this page, with too little volume to support a buyer recommendation.

Battery & Propulsion Reliability
Battery Electric (BEV)
Battery & propulsion complaint analysis for the 2019-2025 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
That's below the typical rate for BEVs in this dataset (median 5.5 per year). Battery & propulsion complaints are lower than peer average for this category.
What kind of battery complaint?
Among the 7 battery-related complaints, here's the type mix. These percentages describe what the complaints are about โ not how reliable the vehicle is overall.
Loss of power, drive unit, inverter, traction motor, DC-DC converter.
Charge port, cable, mobile connector, or session failures.
Low-voltage battery deaths, common on EVs and hybrids that use a 12V for accessories.
Regen brake feel, one-pedal driving, B-mode complaints.
Battery & propulsion recalls (1)
General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2019-2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 and 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 trucks. One of the driveshaft joints may not have been properly welded, causing the driveshaft to separate while the vehicle is moving.
Consequence: If the driveshaft separates, there may be a loss of propulsion, increasing the risk of crash.

Source: classified from NHTSA complaint and recall data. "Battery-related" includes high-voltage propulsion battery, charging system, hybrid drivetrain, electric propulsion, regenerative braking, 12V auxiliary battery, and thermal-event complaints. Other complaints (suspension, steering, brakes, infotainment) appear in the engine and vehicle-level sections. Rates are absolute counts, not normalized per-VIN โ high-volume models naturally produce more raw complaints than low-volume ones. Self-reported death and injury counts are capped per complaint to limit form abuse.

Pack overview
Known issues
How this pack ages (industry context)
Industry fleet aggregates: 2.3% average annual capacity loss across 22,700 EVs / 21 models (Geotab, 2026), and 95% range retention at 5 years on average across 30,000+ vehicles (Recurrent, 2026).
OEM warranty floor on this pack: 8 yr / 100k mi to 70% capacity.
Public per-pack degradation curves are not available for most models. Individual results vary materially with climate, charging behavior, and DC fast-charge frequency.
Vehicle-Level Issues
These issues affect the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 regardless of engine variant.
Buyer's Guide
Among gasoline engines in this generation, the 4.3L V6 in SIDI configuration is the least-troubled engine the data covers in volume: 118 complaints, 'caution' 3.1, 2019-2021 model years only. Buyers willing to forgo V8 power have the cleanest record among the gas options. For shoppers committed to V8 power, the 6.2L L87 ratings sit above the 5.3L L84's. The April 2025 connecting-rod recall (NHTSA 25V274) applies to 2021-2024 6.2L trucks and the long-term fallout is still settling. The Silverado EV is the only 'recommended' powertrain in the generation but is too new to assess for service-life reliability beyond its first two model years.
Before buying any 5.3L L84 or 6.2L L87 Silverado, confirm GM has completed all open recalls via the NHTSA VIN tool. For 6.2L V8 trucks in the 2021-2024 range, verify the connecting-rod inspection or replacement under 25V274 has been completed and request the dealer's repair documentation. For diesel trucks in 2020-2022 model years, check that both the 24V797 transmission control valve recall AND its 26V083 re-do are closed. Earlier 2019-2020 trucks should have all three electronic-brake-module software recalls cleared, plus the seat-belt-pretensioner carpet ignition campaign (19V814).
On the used market, 2019-2020 trucks carry the largest discount but also the deepest set of corrective recalls. A 2022 or 2023 truck with the 4.3L V6 and verified recall completion is the most defensible used-market combination among the gas options the data shows clearly. If a 6.2L L87 truck in the 2021-2024 window is the only available option, the seller should have the 25V274 paperwork in hand before any money changes hands.
