That's below the typical rate for BEVs in this dataset (median 5.5 per year). Battery & propulsion complaints are lower than peer average for this category.

What kind of battery complaint?

Among the 4 battery-related complaints, here's the type mix. These percentages describe what the complaints are about — not how reliable the vehicle is overall.

High-Voltage Battery 2 (50%)

Propulsion battery defects, capacity loss, BMS faults, replacement claims.

12V Auxiliary Battery 1 (25%)

Low-voltage battery deaths, common on EVs and hybrids that use a 12V for accessories.

Charging System 1 (25%)

Charge port, cable, mobile connector, or session failures.

Battery & propulsion recalls (3)
23V842000 ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:PROPULSION SYSTEM:CHARGING:CABLE/CORD:ONBOARD

Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Audi) is recalling certain 2022-2024 RS e-tron GT, e-tron GT, Q4 e-tron Sportback, Q4 e-tron, 2020-2021 Audi A8, 2019-2024 e-tron Quattro, 2020-2024 e-tron Sportback Quattro, Q5, and 2021-2022 A7 vehicles. When using the industrial 220V/240V plug at the 100% charge setting, some home power outlets may be incapable of handling the electrical current required to utilize the compact charging system, causing the outlet or charging cable to overheat.

Consequence: An overheated outlet or charging cable can increase the risk of a fire.

24V228000 ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:PROPULSION SYSTEM:TRACTION BATTERY

Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2022-2024 Audi RS E-Tron GT and E-Tron GT vehicles. The high-voltage battery may experience a short circuit within the battery modules.

Consequence: A short circuit in a high-voltage battery module increases the risk of a fire.

24V726000 ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:PROPULSION SYSTEM:TRACTION BATTERY

Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Audi) is recalling certain 2022-2024 E-TRON GT, and RS E-TRON GT vehicles. The high-voltage battery may experience a short circuit within the battery module.

Consequence: A short circuit in a high-voltage battery module increases the risk of a fire.

12V Auxiliary Battery
  • [2023] The Audi e-tron GT contains a design defect where the 12v battery cannot be charged in the event it becomes depleted. The battery is stored in the front trunk, but this can only be opened when the car has electrical power - there is no manual release. This leaves the vehicle immobilized to the point it must be towed to a dealer using special equipment because the four wheel drive train is locked i

  • [2023] The contact leased a 2023 Audi E-Tron GT. The contact stated that the message that the battery power was reduced to 70 percent was displayed. The contact stated that the battery failed to charge above 70 percent. The reduced performance warning light was illuminated. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V726000 (Electrical System); however, the part to do the recall repair

Source: classified from NHTSA complaint and recall data. "Battery-related" includes high-voltage propulsion battery, charging system, hybrid drivetrain, electric propulsion, regenerative braking, 12V auxiliary battery, and thermal-event complaints. Other complaints (suspension, steering, brakes, infotainment) appear in the engine and vehicle-level sections. Rates are absolute counts, not normalized per-VIN — high-volume models naturally produce more raw complaints than low-volume ones. Self-reported death and injury counts are capped per complaint to limit form abuse.

Known issues

Low
Class-leading 270 kW DC fast-charge capability in ideal conditions; real-world charge curve tapers steeply above 60% SOC and is sensitive to ambient temperature.
High
Early 2020-2021 Taycans experienced software-driven 12V drain causing stranded vehicles; Porsche issued multiple TSBs and a recall (NHTSA 21V-446) addressing the high-voltage relay control software.
Low
Audi e-tron GT (including RS and S e-tron GT) shares the J1 platform, pack architecture, and cell supplier with Taycan and uses an effectively identical 93 kWh pack; the e-tron GT received a major refresh for 2025 with revised cell chemistry tuning that lifts peak power to 670 hp on the RS variant while keeping the same nominal pack capacity.
Low
Cold-weather range loss is steeper than typical NCM packs (~30-35% at 20°F) because the performance-tuned thermal management prioritizes pack temperature for power delivery over range conservation.
Low
Performance Battery Plus (93 kWh nominal) is the dominant US-market trim; base 79 kWh packs were limited and not officially offered in the US after 2022.

How this pack ages (industry context)

Industry fleet aggregates: 2.3% average annual capacity loss across 22,700 EVs / 21 models (Geotab, 2026), and 95% range retention at 5 years on average across 30,000+ vehicles (Recurrent, 2026).

OEM warranty floor on this pack: 8 yr / 100k mi to 70% capacity.

Public per-pack degradation curves are not available for most models. Individual results vary materially with climate, charging behavior, and DC fast-charge frequency.
