The Tesla Model III will be available to the public in 2017.

Tesla may be the safest car ever tested. And company Elon Musk may have shaken up the car industry. But since its debut, Tesla’s inability to make an environmental difference with its high-performance electric car has been thwarted by one large problem.

The Tesla and its six-figure price made the car unaffordable to most buyers. Now, it may all change with the announcement of the new Tesla Model 3, the manufacturer’s third platform.

The base price for the Model 3 is anticipated at $35,000. The price does not include a $7,500 to $13,000 governmental rebate depending upon the state in which the car is purchased.

According to Tesla, the unveiling of the Model 3 will take place in March, and pre-orders will begin immediately. Production will start in 2017.

“It’s going to be probably the most profound car that we make,” Elon Musk, the Tesla founder and CEO said. “It will be a very compelling car at an affordable price.

Musk said the Model 3 is about 20 percent smaller than the Model S and that “it won’t have quite as many bells and whistles.” But the Model 3 will probably come equipped with sensors for autonomous driving — at an extra price.

The Tesla Model 3 is expected to have a range of at least 200 miles per charge.

According to Musk, Tesla plans to open Model 3 factories in China and Europe.

The Model 3 will have a warranty similar to the Model S, including an 8-year, infinite mile transferable warranty on the battery pack and drive unit.
