New $35,000 Tesla Model 3 reservations begin March 31

The Tesla Model S is part of the recall of the electric vehicle manufacturer's new recall

Reservations for the Tesla Model 3, the car that could change the automobile industry, will begin March 31 with a lot of fanfare and bravado from Elon Musk, the carmaker’s CEO. The reason it could alter the automobile industry is that the high performance and extraordinarily safe electric car will now be affordable to the middle class.

The current and previous Tesla models don’t need re-introductions. But while Musk has already achieved a lot with his current vehicles, the introduction of the Model 3 will rectify Tesla’s major downfall. The electric sports car is the safest car ever tested by Consumer Reports and its performance numbers are superior.

But the car’s current base price of $70,000 and its high-end tally about double the entry price, makes it an elitist vehicle without the possibility of greatly impacting the auto industry.

According to Tesla, the price of the Model 3 will begin at $35,000. Reservations will be accepted on the company’s website March 31. The first 200,000 Model 3s sold will be eligible for a $7,500 tax credit as “green” vehicles. The Model 3 is predicted to achieve about 200 miles per charge.

While reservations will be taken, new owners will not take ownership of their vehicles for an estimate one year.

The new Tesla will be a standard 4-door sedan but slightly smaller than the Model S, and there’s been plenty of  “insider” discussion of a future SUV body style.

And then there’s the name. Tesla has the Model X and the Model S, so why will the new offering be called the Model 3?

According to Green Car Reports, Ford owns the trademark on the name Model E, Tesla’s first choice for its new vehicle.
