Maybach mistake: Sean P. Diddy Combs buys son $360,000 car, Haiti charity gets $10,000

It’s hard to understand what motivates a father to buy his son a $360,000 Maybach for his 16th birthday. But rapper Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs has few equals when it comes to extravagance and bad taste

Combs gave his son Justin Dior a new Maybach during a lavish celebration last weekend. The occasion was filmed by MTV for the reality series My Super Sweet 16. The show is about teenagers’ over-the-top birthday celebrations.

The birthday party also featured performances by the rapper’s friends Fabolous, Lil Kim and Juelz Santana.

In addition to the Maybach, Combs gave his son a check for $10,000 which the boy gave to singer Wyclef Jean’s foundation, Yele Haiti.Maybach mistake: Sean P. Diddy Combs buys son $360,000 car, Haiti charity gets $10,000 1

Combs bought the car for his son because he could. Guests attending the party were also asked to make donations for Haiti charity. Doesn’t that make Combs’ gift to his son seem even more preposterous?

Combs and his son live in the top echelon of society. Giving your son a check for $10,000? fine. And the boy gets the idea to turn the money over to charity. That’s fine, too.

The guess here is that the father and son collaborated or were advised to make the donation. Otherwise, they would have looked more foolish than they already look.

Combs is a successful businessman, but the amount he paid for the Maybach could have been used more wisely. He could have expressed his love for his son without camera lights and celebrity reporters scavenging. He could have even bought his son a car.

But the $360,000? Seems Haiti could have used it and Justin Dior Combs could have waited for another day for a new car.

  1. Sean Combs' purchase of a 350K vehicle for his SIXTEEN year old son is the epitome of ignorance and flamboyance. Combs, who is rich beyond the dreams of 90% of you reading this, is an idiot, who, through this action, is showing his son how to also be an idiot. Combs could have used his son's desire for a car to teach the young man responsibility and hard work, two characteristics that Combs had once upon a time. Instead he demonstrated to his son that to be a successful jackass in the public eye, all one needs is to buy a CHILD a car that cost enough money to employ 6 people, including health insurance benefits. That money could have helped the people in Haiti, Chicago, of, let's see. . .his own neighborhood in New York. Combs could have sponsored a poor student without funding to attend NYU. Sean should be ashamed and embarassed for himself and his son. He's obviously forgotton the sacrifices that were made for him to have access to the opportunities upon which he has so bodaciously capitalized.

  2. I totally agree. Given the number of people out of work, the value of the car could support at least 6 families for a year! His priorities are misplaced for sure!

  4. It's a good thing that people are allowed to do with their money what they want. I am a strong believer in social responsibility towards our fellow men. I also believe in capitalism and the American dream of elevating one's self from a life of poverty to lifestyles of the rich and richer. Diddy has every right to spend what he will on his children. Who knows what other values he instills in their lives? Who knows what this kid's previous situation was? For all we know, with Diddy's money, the Maybach may be a downgrade of his previous mode of transport. I have children and have often spoiled them with whatever was in my means. I wish someone would tell me anything regarding the way I spend my money. We can't be proud of the fact that the son gave his own monetary gift to the victims of Haiti's earthquake? Do we need to take an account of all of Diddy's philanthropic endeavors to see if he is warranted in giving his son such a lavish gift? I would venture to say that we as a people would benefit a greater good by being stronger advocates of social responsibility within ones means and not so much worrying about one man's excesses. Are you doing all you can? Worry about that!

    • Yes, the American dream is to be wealthy and yes, he should be able to give his kids more than the average person — he's earned it. But given the current state of the economy, and the earthquake in Haiti, giving his son — who can't event drive yet — a car that is worth as much as it takes some people to make in 4 years of hard word, is nsensitive and selfish. And be aware of the fact that this whole thing was filmed for MTV. This wasn't some private party that he thought was just among other celebriites and friends. He allowed this to be filmed knowing it would be shown on national television. Why couldn't he have given his son a check for $10k and given the $360K to Haiti?
I am in no way "worrying about one man's excesses. I'm worrying about what message he's putting out there by knowing that this was going to be made public. And I don't have to worry about my efforts. I am a voice and donate — money and time — in my community. So yes, it angers and frustrates me when I see people all around me struggling to keep our school system afloat, trying to raise much need money to save jobs — probably the same amount of money Sean Combs blew in one day on a birthday party.

  5. Can't wait until his 16-year-old destroys the car — as all teenagers learning to drive do. And then as Diddy continues to spend his money based on ignorance instead of humanity, he files for bankruptcy. Just sit back and watch the show. I am sure there will be more news to come. As we have all heard the saying "You can't fix stupid."

  6. Honestly….who cares! This man can spend his money however he wants. There’s not a damn thing anyone can do about it. I’m certain everyone has spent their money foolishly to express their love for another individual. So what makes this different? I mean what’s 360k to man worth nearly a billion?
As far as donating money, half of you clearly can donate on smaller scales but don’t. So shut up find another outlandish article to read and more importantly move on with your life. I’m certain Diddy did!
