Car buyers in India with a limited budget want to buy inexpensive cars that don’t look cheap. At least, that’s why the Tata Nano LX has been developed.

Tata’s original Nano, introduced in 2009, hasn’t sold as well as the carmaker expected. It originally cost the equivalent of about $2,000. Tata Motors has laid off many workers and reduced its production of the Nano.

Tata currently sells around 2,500 Nanos per month, about 25 percent of the car’s peaks sales month in April, 2012.

The original Tata Nano, the world’s cheapest mass-produced car, had no air conditioning, no stereo and a single windshield wiper in its base model. The interior had no glove box and thinly padded seats that didn’t adjust.

New Nanos have a sound system and improved interiors, in addition to the refurbished exterior. The new Nano LX will be priced at $3,578 and will be marketed to buyers ages 35 and younger.
