    The Smart car is getting a lot of attention for its small size and style, and now it's earning impressive crash test ratings.

    The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in Arlington, Virgina, has given the Smart Fortwo — the smallest car for sale in the United States — the top rating of good for front and side crash protection.


    Gooding & Company, the official auction house for the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, has announced early entries for its annual Pebble Beach auctions, Aug. 16-17, 2008.

    Among the significant cars consigned to date are the 1934 Triumph Dolomite 8C-2400 GS, 1938 ‘Sleeping Beauty’ Alfa Romeo 6C and the original 1914 Stutz Series E Bearcat.




    The Tesla Roadster, the long-awaited electric sports car powered by a lithium-ion battery and possessing a more than $100,000 price tag, is now available for the first time in a Westwood, Calif., dealership.

    The car was developed in San Carlos, Calif., with venture capital of more than $40 million. Google Inc. founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin were among the initial investors.




    The yearlong celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Ford Model T began in March and the iconic vehicle will be honored throughout 2008 in a series of national events.

    In conjunction with Ford Motor Company and Ford Motor Company Fund, the celebration began at the 2008 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance in Amelia Island, Fla., March 7-9.

    In celebration of its 40-year heritage, Hot Wheels is in the midst of a yearlong, varied celebration of the brand's unique position in the marketplace.

    The celebration began Last February at the 105th American International Toy Fair in New York. Hot Wheels introduced the most expensive in the company's history. It’s valued at $140,000.

    First, Tata Motors announced The Nano, the world’s least expensive car. Then, the India-based automaker announced it had purchased Jaguar and Land Rover. And now there’s another surprise from the innovative company.

    Tata Motors, a division of India’s largest conglomerate, has announced it will start selling a car in India by 2009 that runs on compressed air.



    The popularity of hybrid vehicles in the United States continues to rise. According to a report by the Green Car Congress in Washington, D.C., sales of hybrids in the U.S. rose 10 percent in March 2008 compared to 2007 sales in the same month.

    Consumer Reports is well-known for its lists. And in the automotive world that includes the standard yearly best and worst lists and more niche areas like best used cars, best sport utility vehicles and best family cars.

    But the Consumer Report list that impressed me recently is Consumer Reports list of Most Overlooked Cars. It’s a short list for 2008 — four vehicles.




    Deusenberg, Ferrari and Buggati are all fine automobiles, and all might logically hold the label as the World’s Most Expensive Car. However, the most expensive car in the world might not be the classic that readily comes to mind.

    According to a feature in, all of all publications, the Jamaican Gleaner, a newspaper in Kingston, Jamaica, the most expensive car in the world might just be an Audi.





    Volvo, the Swedish manufacturer known its durable and safety-oriented vehicles, has received an international award for its commitment to preventing accidents.

    Volvo’s in-house developed technology for avoiding low-speed collisions has been awarded the American “Traffic Safety Achievement Award” at this year’s World Traffic Safety Symposium in New York.
