First, Tata Motors announced The Nano, the world’s least expensive car. Then, the India-based automaker announced it had purchased Jaguar and Land Rover.
And now there’s another surprise from the innovative company.
Tata Motors, a division of India’s largest conglomerate, has announced it will start selling a car in India by 2009 that runs on compressed air.
The five-seat
vehicle, called OneCAT, will utilize an engine system invented by Guy Negre of France.
According to media reports, Negre has been working on the concept for more than 10 years.
Tata Motors is the currently the only licensee. Sales of the vehicle, will be initially limited to India and Europe.
According to Negre, the engine technology has more thatn 30 patents registered. The compressed air will be stored in carbon fiber tanks and a top speed of 70 mph is predicted.
According to its inventor, the car can be refueled in minutes from an air compressor and can go 125 miles on approximately $3 worth of compressed air.
