Amid recent rumors of a bankruptcy of one of its rivals, Ford Motor Co., has added more concern to the troubled automotive industry by announcing its sales fell 27.9 percent in June. Ford’s announcement came eon the first day of the second half of the year and only a few days after rumors of Chrysler’s demise spread throughout the industry.
Amid rumors of the bankruptcy of one of
its primarly rivals, Ford Motor Co., added more fodder to the troubled
automotive industry by announcing its sales fell 27.9 percent in June.
Ford’s
announcement came on the first day of the second half of the year and
only a few days after rumors of Chrysler’s demise spread throughout the
marketplace. Chrysler has vehemently denied it will seek bankruptcy
protection.
Ford said its decline, which includes a 14 percent
decrease in sales in the past year ending June 30, is based on higher
gas prices and low consumer economic confidence.
The Detroit
manufacturer reported particularly poor sales of pickup trucks and
sport utility vehicles, including a 41 percent year-over-year decline
for the F-Series pickup and a 52 percent drop for the Ford Explorer SUV.
According
to an Associated Press report, the demand for fuel-efficient cars has
prompted skyrocketing sales for Toyota Motor Corp. and Honda Motor Co.
Ford
said sales of its smallest car, the Ford Focus, rose 28 percent in the
first six months of the year, despite declining sales in June. Ford
recently said it plans to increase production of the Focus as wells the
Mercury Mariner and Ford Escape small SUVs.
